| when weanng from baby food to solid food? |
|
|
Not that i have a baby but i am curious....people always say they have a hard time going from seeds to pellets, why dont people just start pellets right away while hand feeding?
Also is there a breakdown or link for the breakdown of what the best food break down for all birds are from parakeets to macaws and in between? Like I am pretty sure Coackatiels need more seed then a conure for example
Thanks |

I've handfed several birds and yes we do start them on pellets but also we do what is called abundance weaning. This means offering them a very wide variety of healthy foods. It is what I feel the best method. That way the bird will not be such a picky eater. We don't feed seed to our birds other than when they are weaning but we do use raw unshelled sunflower seeds as training incentives. I shouldn't say we totally don't feed seeds as our cockatiels and budgie are not totally off of seeds. I am trying to get them that way though. |

Feeding, each breed of bird requires a little different diet. Although almost all parrots will eat anything you put in front of them.. You pick the breed then you research what is best from them.
Weaning, is s diffcult time for a bird. The drop almost 1/4 there body weight durning this time. That scare me and Carrie everytime. We start them on Seeds, sunfollower or anything they will eat, what ever they want at this point in time is what they get. Seeds are like candy to them, and just as unhealth. But they will eat them. After they are eating ok, then you start to adjust thier diet, get them to Vegs and fruits are not that much of a problem, they will eat just about anything they see you eat, so you just set down with a bowl of furit and start eating it in front of them....But pettels, tell a 3 year old he has got to give up a Candy Bar for health food, ya right...You try it... and see how well you do...

I think that weaning birds to a seed diet used to be the norm, but that is changing more in recent years as people are becoming more & more educated.
Then again, there are those, such as the breeder my sennie came from, who swears by a seed & fresh food diet, but I think those people are the minority these days.
I've never weaned a baby, but I would wean them onto what John & Carrie refer to as an abundance diet, if I ever did. And, of course, baby birds, like any other kind of baby, are much more willing to accept new things, including food, when they are introduced at a younger age. |

I think some birds are weaned on seeds only, because it's much more economical? (Sometimes, I get this idea, I'm not sure if I'm correct)
-> I don't say that a seed diet is bad, but I usually hear comments like: Do you know what pellets costs? Then I'll draw my conclusions..
What do you mean with food break down? |

Sue: I think by food break down she means the percentage of various different types of foods in a bird's diet i.e. 80% pellets, 10% fresh foods and 10% seeds and nuts.
My avian vet has told me that cockatiels require some seeds in their diet. I give Lily a small sprinkling of seeds on her fresh food supper daily and a small sprig of millet as a treat, when I come home from work. |
