| Wrapping food in paper? |
|
|
In the latest Foster & Smith catalog, they recommend wrapping food in paper, or covering food dishes with paper, to give birds an extra chance to "forage". I thought this may help stimulate Dewey, and possibly help the budgies with their weight issues.
Do you think this is a good idea? Is regular white paper safe for them to be chewing on?
Of course they all have chewed on a corner of someone's homework at one point or another but I don't want to be giving them it purposefully if it isn't safe.

Ordinary newspaper with black ink is safe. I've heard it's best to avoid any colored printing. Newspaper printers had to change to using safe, black ink because too many people use the newspaper to wrap up their food and groceries and people also eat breakfast while handling the newspaper with their fingers. |

Encouraging & providing birds more opportunity to forage is really being pushed in the parrot world a lot recently & I think it's great!
I did notice some where that some one wrapped birthday & Christmas present treats in holiday wrapping paper, & I have to wonder about the safety of the ink used in them, I think I'd avoid that.
Here's another thread about ways to encourage foraging

Just today a friend handed me a print out from The Non-Toxic Times Newsletter (Vol. 7, No, 11) The article on dioxins said,"...At the very least, keep clorine-bleached paper products out of the kitchen where they might come in contact with food." The address at the bottom of the page is http://www.seventhgeneration.c.....;issue=... |

Max just got around to trying the newspaper thing a few days ago. He wrapped the seeds pretty loosely in the paper for the first time and Dewey saw him doing it. Apparently he had a fun time figuring it out and crawling in to grab seeds, then crawling back out again to eat them.
Then Max put some seeds in the terrifying Snuggle Hut. Dewey went on a mission to find them in there and pull them out too. I'm not sure I'm delighted by the idea of seed husks etc in the Snuggle Hut. But I guess if he can get used to it...
I'm not sure why Max decided to try this while I wasn't home...and for once he didn't make a little video with the digital camera! :/ oh well.
Now we need to try some more of the ideas in the DIY forum for wrapping foods and see if Dewey will catch on to the idea of playing with stuff!
