A redlored and a bluefronted??  Reply with quote

I have just bought a mate for my very tame and cuddly redlored Amazon. We found a two-year old very tame and talkative blue fronted. We've had our redlored for about 4 months, and he's very bonded to especially me. He's about 6 months old now. We thought he would be thrilled to have a mate, since I have to work full time, and he has to be alone a lot, but they don't get along at all. When they are in separate cages they seem to talk to each other a little, and they are definitly curious of eachother. But when I tried to have them out together, the blue fronted (called Andrea) chases my poor red lored, and when I put them together in the big cage, my redlored (called Papageno) keeps running after Andrea (it doesn't seem like he has any ill intends. He does not use any threat postures, and only bite to defend himself). Andrea, really use threat postures every time he comes around (tail fanned, wings slightly spread, and beak half open).
We really like our new parrot, she's cuddly and friendly, but we're starting to give up hope that they'll ever like each other.
What can we do to make them like each other? Is that even possible? How long should we wait until we admit defeat, and sell Andrea?

I've just now read that it's really hard to find a mate for a tame parrot, which has bonded with a human, is that true?
We would very much like for Papageno to have a partner of sorts, since he really doesn't take being left alone kindly..

Greetings
Ditte

Hi Ditte, welcome to fluffies..
Wow! Two amazons.. What are their names? Do you have photos of them? (You can put them in your diary/ homepage.. Read more about that here: http://www.fluffies.org/en/que.....-vf32.html )

Parrots might not like each other from the beginning. You can try to introduce them to each other in a neutral environment: A different room. Smile
I think you'll also need patience. Most of my birds didn't like each other from the start.. Smile

Andrea and Papageno  Reply with quote

Hi, and thanks for your reply. They are called (the female blue-fronted) Andrea and (the male red-lored) Papageno. Today they've been having these really loud screaming contests, which I'm not sure how to interpret. I don't know if it's friendly or less so.
How long did you wait for you parrots to start liking eachother? Should I take them to another room to interact without a cage?

That's a funny name, Papageno. Very Happy Never heard that one before!

I took my parrots outside (their wings are clipped) or to my parents.. There I introduced them to each other on flat surface. Very Happy

It took Iago & Zazu almost 4 years to tolerate each other. They don't like each other very much.. Rolling Eyes
It took Wheezy & Scuttle about some weeks? Iago & Flit I think a month?
