All a quiver  Reply with quote

My too has occassions when he will shake, I don't know if he is scared, excited or cold, he will fluff a little and I can see his tummy feathers quivering, he'll squeek in his sooky voice and get cuddles. Does anyone elses bird do this?

Hey Shells,

Don't worry Smile Feathers move when birds are feeling any kind of emotion. For example when they's angry and protecting their territory they puff up and all their feahters stand up to make themselves look bigger as I'm sure you already know. When only chest feathers are quivering, it's usually a sign of happiness. My Grey does this all the time, like your Too, when he gets cuddles, or just before he falls asleep. Usually if a bird is scared or cold you would see his wings shaking as well, and the feathers would also be flattened. Very Happy So by the sounds of it, your Too is just a happy bird!

That's a relief. Very Happy With the colder weather I wondered if he was warm enough, I've been putting the heater on for him and blow drying him after his shower so he doesn't get cold. He loves his blow dry and he turns into a big boofy sooky bundle and goes to sleep.
His tummy feathers quiver when I take him out with me, he's not too sure about the lift, he can't get his head around how we go in and come out somewere else, he looks around like Confused Then as we head for the front door his tummy feathers start shaking, I can scratch his tummy and he'll fluff up even more, I thought he might be scared but I think now he is just excited about his outing (I call them eggscursions, he also does eggercise and gets eggcited Rolling Eyes )
I guess I've been a little worried about him lately, he's going through his first molt, his beak is going through an odd process in its molt and his new feathers are coming through with a break in the barbs (so they are shaped like a peakocks tail feathers) I read up on this and I think it's the result of either his being seperated from his parents too young (his father died while he was still in the nest) his weaning or the anasthetic when he was mico chipped. In any case I've been keeping an eye on him to be sure he's not getting sick.

Hey Shell

I have noticed Apollo doing that quite often in the colder weather. One of the major reason why they quiver is to keep the body temperature. Birds has a naturally higher body temperature then us human. They'll tend to fluff up and quiver. This create movement of the body, and also encourages blood flows, which then in turns heat up the body. I hope this is making some sense. Smile It doesn't mean that they are not warm enough. It's one of the way that the birds regulate their body temperature in colder months. There's nothing to worry about when everything other signs shows that they are healthy!!

Bird can sense the slightest temperature change. If they have been moved into a different environment say the outside, or even in the elevator, they may quiver to heat up the body temperature just like what piccaso does when you take him outside.

On the other hand, if a bird sits there and quiver and fluffed up, and his personality has change like if he's become more subdue, and quieter, they may be something wrong within. Keep a close eyes on things when that happen. and if it doesn't change in a short period of time, a trip to the vet is called for. and I'm sure that's not Piccaso's situation (I hope)

Just on what you say about warming him up. I'm a strong believer that Teflon is bad for our birds of course. Just so you know, some space heater, and also some hair dryers have teflon coated heating elements!! That is very dangerous for the bird. I would recommend to stop using the heater to dry or warm up your bird. I know that birds just love being blow dry, but I would only be using the normal fan speed on it. No heat. Just a thought for you to contemplate over. Don't mean to scare you if I did. sorry.

H'mm..I've read in several books that vibrating chest feathers is a sign of happiness or contentment. Perhaps it's partial to Greys? because my Grey does this even when he's really warm.

Another way you can tell if your bird is cold is by touching their feet or beak, usually if they're cold their feet will be cold to the touch.

Hey Shirin.

Thanks for picking it up. I was meant to say on top of what you've said as well.

There can be other reason why they vibrate they chest muscles. I guess all you can do is to keep an eye on things. Apollo tends to quiver when he's cold. Smile as well as when he's happily sitting then napping away Smile

Touching their feet and beak is definitely a good way of checking their body temp. Smile
