My Amazon Redwing "Rizla" has no problem with sitting on my hand etc.
My problem is that if I put my other hand near him to stroke him he chatters at me and bites.
I have thought of putting that anti-feather biting stuff on my fingers to try and stop him.
Anyone got any ideas? |

Hi Tris, welcome here!
Does Rizla bite you really hard or is it a 'warning nip'?
Please keep in mind that not all parrots like being petted..
(People don't like to be petted by anyone too, just by 'choosen' ones, partners so to say..)
Of course, there are always exceptions..
I think it's great that he sits on your hand.. Can you take him through your room, do things with him etc? Like playing together etc? |

Hello Tris! Welcome! How long have you had your amazon? Is she young? Has she passed hands before? Sue is right, some birds just don't like to be pet. And some only like to be pet under certain conditions and sercumstances. (did I spell that right??) Oh well, who cares if I spelled it right, you know what I meant |

I've had him/her (not sure yet) for just over a month now. I got Rizla about 3 weeks from the nest. He was an aviary bird.
I'm able to take him anywhere in the house and he does'nt seem scared of me at all.
I managed to get him on my hand at first by bribing him with food but I'm trying to cut down on the food I give him in this manner. |

Here's the latest.
I come to the conclusion that Rizla is not one of those birds that likes to be petted.
I tried the anti-feather biting spray on my hand and it worked, now he only playfully nibbles and thats rare.
I can take him all round the house now but he likes to sit on my head. So next question is...
How do I stop him CR****NG on my head!!!!! |

Hi Tris
It's good to hear of the little progress with Rizla, (nice name by the way). Some birds do take a lot lot longer to learn to trust the patting thing, so yeah.. keep up the good work and may be down the road sometimes you'll be rewarded with it.
As with the whole head thing... well my only advice is to not let him sit up there!! LOL...
Oh I guess you could always periodically move him from your head... When my Apollo sits on my shoulder, I move him only the table where he poop and then he'll climb back onto my shoulder. I've done it so many times that he knows when I put him down on the table, it's time to go. so may be you can give that a go. Although, sometimes I do forget to move him, and he can't hold on anymore, so he kinda just go... so yeah.. no guarantees.. which is fine by me, coz I don't want my bird to hold it in until i tell him to. What if I forget and he'd be stuff!! LOL |
