bird sleeps a lot  Reply with quote

Hey, I was wondering why my bird is sleeping a lot lately. he is a senegal parrot and he has been going in his cage and sleeping for about an hour a few times each day. I make sure to give him at least 10 hours of sleep at night so i dont see a problem there. Besides that his behavior has not changed that i can tell, and he seems happy. He has toys in his cage and I spend a lot of time with him. Maybe its not a big deal but i just wanted to find out if it is.
Thx,
Tad

Tad,
How old is your Senegal? How long have you had him? My birds all nap throughout the day. I don't think that's too uncommon. As long as your bird is eating, playing, and acting normal otherwise I would not be too concerned. But if he's fluffed up when he sleeps or becomes less active I would definitely recommend a vet visit.

You know, my sennie naps too. Is it something that has just started all of a sudden?
Like Chispleeze says, if he's playing & being active when he's not napping, I don't think it's anything unusual.

I agree with what has been said, but I have a small thing to add: can you weigh him? Usually, one of the first signs of illness (noticeble) is weightloss.

I am not a sengal expert. But any time one of my birds has a noticable change in habit, I get concerned. If it is just naps, they all nap. But if it is a major change in what he normal does then. Look a little deeper into things, birds by thier nature hide thier illness when they are sick, Sue is right about this one I believe. If he has changed his habits then there is a reason for that change.
