| Booboo the destroyer |
|
|
I'm not sure what got into my Booboo lately He started chewing and destroying the soft part of the furniture, mainly the chair. It has threads pulled and sticking out all over the place He is starting to be bad influence on Papug - I caught him chewing on the lining of the chair pillows too! Fortunately Papug understands command "no!" but Booboo doesn't care and keeps chewing...
I gave them both time out, but I'm not sure what is going on. It's a new behaviour. They both have enough toys and ropes to chew on. Any ideas? |

Keep up with putting him in his cage when he does bad deeds with a sharp "NO" as soon as you catch him in the act. Keep him in his cage for about 30 minutes then take him back out again. You may have to keep him off furniture. |

Monika I don't know what to suggest other than, maybe cover the chair when the birds are out? Time outs never work with my lovebirds I will say NO! and put them in their cage, but once they come out they'll go straight back to being naughty Maybe offer them paper to distract them from the chair? |

Thanks all for the suggestions.
Chauita's Mom: Yes, I gave them time out today. We'll see tomorrow if it did any good...
Ksue: LOL... He liked the chair until today! He has lots of other stuff to chew on.
Cathy: LOL... I really DO believe in miracles
Shirin: The chair is kind of big, almost like a lovesit, but I can try to cover the top with something. It might be a good idea. As for paper Booboo is the best shredder in the area No need for the electrical one |

Hmm haven't you heard of the rules of parrots???
one of them being 'If I see it, it's mine'
and another one being... 'No' means try again later.... (or something along that line!! LOL)
so Booboo has discovered the fun of chewing up furnitures huh? I'm sorry to say, there's no real way of curbing this behaviour apart from keep puttin her away. She won't give it up. Like Shirin says, putting on time out won't help, as they don't associate that with they are not allowed.... if they want, they get...
good luck protecting your chair though...hehe..
sorry I'm not much of a help here.. I have a cockatoo that's pretty much put dents and holes in just about all my furniture!! |

That can be quite a pain, if they start chewing on everything!
I wouldn't pay attention to it, not as in 'saying no' or forbidding. (Ofcourse, when they start chewing on dangerous things as electrical wires it is something different)
You can distract Booboo with something, without looking at him. Then, you can show what you're doing, telling him what you're doing once you got his attention. Then give him some sort of thing to do. (Booboo may touch the thing you hold in your hands) Then praise, and put him somewhere else. Then praise again.
Hope it works? |

LOL... These are the rules by which Booboo lives, no guestion about that! And it's soooo true! He is told "no" and he will stop doing it, hide somewhere for a couple of minutes, waits for me to turn around for a second and then there he is doing same thing again!
Papug actually understands "no". When he does something naughty and is told "no!" - he will not do it again. |

I tried to distract him and it worked only for a while. Then he went back to chewing on the chair
We'll see how today goes. I'll let you know. |

I taught Bunny the phrase "Be careful" right from the start. I read in this book that everytime something bad happened, like if she flew down and crashed into something, or fell off her perch, I should say Be Careful! And so she started associating those words with bad things happening and now if she's about to do something naughty, like walk over to the lovebirds to pick a fight, I say "Be careful!" and she stops and walks away But thus far I have had no luck trying teach my lovebirds right from wrong |

It didn't really go well today either
I hope it's just a phase he is going through. We'll see.

Oh, but he's such a cute little destroyer
I think the only way you're gonna be able to save the furniture is by covering it with something heavy enough that he can't bite thru. I don't have a big problem with Manu & the furniture, but there's not much left of any of our woodwork or wooden dining chairs |

What about saying no and then when he stops giving him a chew toy that he can hold. A piece of rope, a rattle, bird safe rawhide, anything that he will play with . |
