Hi meero,

A parrot or parakeet that is biting and chewing his/her feathers can be a very difficult problem. Sad

As far as I know there can be a lot of different causes. There can be some type of irritation that causes the bird to start preening him/herself. If the preening does not help the bird he/she can continue till he/she has lost a lot of feathers.

An other possibility is that the bird is depressed (as your vet is saying), bored, is missing someone (person of other animal).

Did the problem started when you separated your birds?

Hi meero,

If you put your birds into separate cages and place them at some distance from each other. How do the bird react to each other?

If all goes well, maybe you can put the cages closer together. Very Happy

PS: One of your birds is a cockatoo. Cockatoos are known for their aggression to other birds and animals. I would really think twice before putting an other bird by a cockatoo. Sad

hi birdaddy

thanks for the advice, when i put them facing each other there is no problem but the male is losing more of his feathers so thats why i took him away in my room,,, the cockatoo is friendly but still there is a good distance from the male ringneck,, i feel hes itchy sometimes thats why hes removing his feathers but there are no mites like the vet has said is there any spray or powder for itchy condition in birds,,, thanks alot

Hi meero,

How is the skin of your ring-neck parakeet doing?
Is it completely intact?
Are the red spots or irritated areas or something else?

How much attention do you give the parakeet when he is "busy" with his feathers?
Maybe he does it to get more of your attention? Negative attention is better then no attention.
There are cases where parrot were complete bald (except the head) by their own doing and after a certain period all the feathers have grown back Shocked

hi there

what i mean by eating the feathers is that hes pulling them out intentionally thats it so at the end he will remove them before they grow so u feel hes bald thats it in simple words

thanks man
