FlUtTeRiNg like CRAZY  Reply with quote

Hi guys, as some of you know I am the proud new owner of a pretty little parrotlet, Chiquita! I've had her for about a week now, and as she is getting more and more used to her surroundings, and is flying away less and less while I have her out of the cage, she is becoming quite the booger to get out of her cage! At first, she would step right up, and still will when shes out of her cage, but to get her out is quite a little game! I will reach in and before I even get close to her she usually flutters down to the bottom of her cage, and then if I reach down there she goes crazy fluttering! She does this even when I am only getting in her cage to change her food and water dishes! I'm not quite sure how to respond, and I can't help pulling away when she does it- it startles me so! I appreciate any suggestions! Thanks!

I can understand you're pulling away when she does this, but I wouldn't do so.. Please continue what you're doing.. Else she'll think that by doing this, you'll go away. She learned you a new trick.. Smile
If you do things, you can talk to her: Now I'm cleaning this, now I'm picking up that.. Smile

Good luck!

Hey Luella! Hmmm ... I don't know what to say in this case, other than to agree with what Sue has already said. It sounds like she may be a little frightened still tho. Course, the cage is her home & I think birds are always somewhat territorial of their cages to a degree, some more than others.
I think she will settle down soon, it'll just take some time probably.

The cage is their one true safe place and because she doesn't fully trust you yet and here comes your hand in her safe place Shocked She'll have to get used to it and come to realize you won't harm her in her cage. Give it time Smile

I just read your funny It TICKLES!!! post, and I don't think your bird is afraid of you... well. at least not with your head. It occurred to me that maybe it is just that big, scary hand entering her safe place that scares her. If you get her attention with your voice and make eye contact while your face is close to your hand, maybe she will understand that the hand belongs to you. I agree that explaining what you are doing should help a lot.

Just keep your hand still, and wait for her to calm down and examine it before moving it again. Eventually, she'll figure out that you're not going to hurt her.
