| How do i tame a lovebird? |
|
|
Hi, we just got a lovebird from a friend, they completely ignored this poor bird. Its not tame at all. My husband loves birds, so he just reached right into the cage and picked it up, he held it for a bit but then passed it to me. All was fine but then it started biting me, at first sort of soft to test the waters, but then harder and harder. We thought we would need to hold him/her everyday until it got use to us, but this morning it bit my nephew so hard he was going to cry and he is 15. It makes it very hard to tame him when your afraid of being bitten. Obviously we are going about this all wrong. It wont eat food out of our hand, it just stays as far away from us as possible. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Hi Sweety and Welcome,
I am afraid to say that you may have rushed the bird a bit - when I got mine home she stayed in the cage and let her come to me (ie her inside - me outside)
Your little one has just had a move and no matter the circumstances which he/she was in - it is still a big thing to a bird to be moved.
He/She has to learn to trust you, and if it has been ignored previously will probably veiw you appoaching him/her as a threat initially...
Just take your time and let the bird come to you and keep it in a place where you always are - so that it can be a part of your everyday life...
Lots of toys and fresh fruit and veg (no caffiene, avocado, chocolate) and wait for the fun to begin...
Hope this helps
Regards
Fi

Well actually i went to the store yesterday and got new toys and treats and good food. after a few hours of it getting use to its new cage, we just left the door open and she came out on her own. She wont step up onto our finger but she will sit on our shoulder
She seems to have fell in love with me tho, she likes to sit on my shoulder and nuzzle with my hair. Then last night she didnt want to go back in her cage.
I found a website that helps with taming and training lovebirds, and that helped alot. Thanks alot! BTW i messed up, my birds name is sweety, my name is Ali
