Oh wow! It looks easy from here. But I know it won't be when I'll try it on Iago or Zazu! |

Surprisingly this is a followup video to a column she wrote for "Good Bird Magazine" a publication put out by Barbara Heidenreich. The Mag is on training and this Vet actually talks about how to train your bird to were a harness....

is a great referacne for training birds...

Hi what the video shows is the result of training, but not the trainig itself -that is why it looks so easy.
Your brid would first have to learn to be handled all over and to raise his wings for aou. Then you would put the entire harness ito your hand with just a tiny little bit showiing. Slowly approachwith frequent rewards only to the point BEFORE he shows any aversion. Forcing your bird will trow you massivley back in your training and trust. Proceed until you can touch your brid with the tiny bit of harness visible. Gradually show more and more of the harness, always rewarding.
Once he tolarates the entire harness being right next to him without any show of fear, place a trip for a millisecond across his back, reward.
liek this you continue in many many small steps, always rewarding and making sure you do not overtax your bird.
And when you use a harnes be super careful! The best is to attach the lead to your belt, so you have both hands free in an emergency and run no risk of accidentally letting go of the leash!
Also, pay attention to your bird's wishes and feelings. Does he enjoy outings or is he scared to death. Consider whether you are doing the outings for him - or to show him off.
