In my opinion, I feel it depends on the breed. Smaller birds like parakeets I think could be fully flighted. Parrots I think should be clipped. I don't feel that wild birds get THAT much more exercise than pet birds. I mean, wild birds don't have all the toys and climbing things that we provide for our pet birds to keep them stimulated. Our fids get plenty of exercise, wing flapping, gnawing, climbing ladders and cages, maintaining balance on a shoulder or arm that is moving, physical contact and play, tug-o-war etc..... I think the bird is SAFER being clipped. No fear of crashing into walls and breaking a neck or wing, no fear of flying into a boiling pot of water or landing on a hot stove, no fear of flying out a window or door. The list goes on.
Chaquita, on the other hand, is fully flighted. She just chooses not to fly. She 26 years old. I don't know if she just "chooses" not to fly or if she thinks she "can't" fly due to the years of being clipped. I still harness her though when we go shopping, as a precaution. |

IMHO - and we all know Im a total neophyte at the birdie thing - I think it's a good idea to let them fly because if they ever do (God forbid) get out, it is their primary means of defense. I always try to think of the worst case scenario - I certainly have no worries that CJ will accidentally get out, but what if something like a tornado or something happened? Nothing I could do to keep him safe and sound - he's going to be outside. If he is not able to get up, he's not going to be safe.
I will admit it limits what I can do with him - I would absolutely love to take him out and about with me, which I won't do because he can fly. But in my mind, it's the smartest thing in a bigger picture! |
