Need help for a friends bird  Reply with quote

A nurse at the nursing home where I work told me today that her musstash parkeet female has layed an egg and there is no male so what should she do about getting the egg from her bird. Should she let her keep it or take it away? I told her to take it and she said when she tried the bird wanted to bite her hand so she left it in the cage. Another person told her to leave it in there and let the bird sit on it and she will get tired of sitting then get the egg. I hate to see the bird do all that and not have a baby in the end. What should she do guys?I need to let her know tomorrow when I go to work so send suggestions fast Laughing

Hi danabird-Your friend should leave the egg in there and let the bird sit on it eventually she will give up on it but if you take it from her it might incourage her to lay more eggs and then more serious problems could result such as calcium defficiences or egg binding which could lead in her death...the only other thing you could tell her to go out and buy a plastic egg and replace it with that...which right now at easter time she should be able to find one pretty easy...Hope this helps..Pam

I agree with Pam, she should leave it in there. Taking it away will only encourage her to complete the clutch and lay more eggs. She will eventually get tired of sitting on it and realize it's not going to hatch. Karen

See if you can find out why the bird is in breeding mode and laying eggs, things like the owner bird interactions being percieved by the bird as a sexual bond, reducing how much awake time the bird has can alter her perception of it being breeding season, changes in diet too can sometimes help replace the vitamins she could have lost in laying.
