Hi Billemma Smile and welcome here,
I agree with you, I put all my birds on my shoulder, even my African Grey, and she never bites me or act like she's more dominant than me when she's on my shoulder... I think the whole "don't put your parrots on your shoulder" thing is a myth Wink Very Happy

The don't put birds on your shoulder is not a myth. All of my birds I am able to put on my shoulder but I do not trust my cockatoo on other people's shoulders he is a little lier. Rolling Eyes he acts sweet when he is on their hand but once he is on thier shoulder is all king of the mountain. He has not hurt anyone yet and I do not intend to let him so he is not allowed on anyone elses shoulder. He only does this with strangers and anyone he thinks he can push around.
Most people that are bitten by their birds on their shoulders are being protected. Rolling Eyes lol The bird will try to protect their person from whatever they see as dangerous by chasing them away. As long as you can trust your bird and you are able to read his body language you should be fine with a bird on your shoulder.

faerieprincess, I was just kidding about the myth thing Very Happy, It definitely depends on the size of the bird, and the the relatioship you have with your bird. Very Happy

Definitely all depends on the bird. I love my apollo, but he has his moments when he's on my shoulder!!! Smile I still have him there though.

No Billemma, not all shoulder birds bite. They may never bite. BUT, there's always that chance that s/he could for some unknown reason or by getting spooked. We all know the chance we are taking when having a wild spirited animal on our shoulder. They are and always will be animals. We can teach them neat things and act almost human like, but that doesn't change their wild natured instincts. All you can do is expect the unexpected and never harm your bird if something painful happens.

Agree. My parrots always sit on my shoulders and they have never bitten my face or acted inappropriatly. Papug will actually tilt his head, close his eyes and snuggle up with my cheek whenever he gets to sit on my shoulder. He can sit like this for the longest time without moving at all Smile

Smile Yes, Papug is a sweety Smile
Booboo preens my hair too! Laughing But he usually sits on top of my head to do it Smile I don't let Papug sit on my head though. I wouldn't let Booboo do that either but sometimes he has difficulties holding on on the shoulder (esp when I move around) because of the lack of nails. When he sits on my head he can acutally grab my hair with his little feet. He uses them like a little palms/hands.
