| not sure what this means? |
|
|
today me and my husband had our 1 1/2 yr. old brown throated conure out and she was on a fluffy blanket and started to chew and nibble on my husbands hand and then she started to rub her butt on his fingers and then would get off then back up and rub on him again this lasted for about 1 to 2 minutes. Then about an hour later she did the same thing to me. Can anyone explain this? Also we have been working with her and getting her used to petting because her previous owner used to hit her and did a hack job on her wings. Could the petting be causing her to do this. |

I think your birdy is masturbating. Please don't encourage this: though it might be flattering, it may cause trouble in behavior and possibly health.
That's not a nice thing of her previous owner to do. Usually, people use different kind of techniques, not because they want to harm the bird, but because they are taught to/ don't know better.. |

From the sounds of it you have a male. One of our Budgies used to masturbate on his ladder - if you see ejaculate you know for sure it is a male - unless I'm missing something important about birds!
I have the same problem with our Budgie Rio. He is in love with our hands & feet. We let him say hello to them & then distract him shortly after. It is improving.
You have to look into what stimulates a bird sexually - lots of problems can occur when you don't know. They get so confused & you have heard that sometimes they will attack others to defend their mate. You don't want that starting up.
Here is a wonderful site - they have many articles on bird issues:

& about sexual stuff - how we should 'handle' our birds, is:

thank you....well i believe it is a female but that is only checking the vent area I have not yet had the bird DNA sexed. Well yesterday was the first time this masturbation was shown so i am hoping i can stop it because I do not want to cause any kind of damage to the bird. Those links have been helpful and thank you again. |

To sex a bird by viewing the vent takes years of specialised talent & few can do it. It may seem silly but that's the way it is. We had chickens when I was little & the sexer came to the farm when the chicks came out of the hatchery. At that time our sexer was Japanese & my father said that they were the best - their schools knew how to teach it better. The man tried to teach me as I was fascinated - they virtually turn the vent inside out & use a magnifier .
I have never heard of a parrot being sexed like that.
I would definately discourage the masturbation on you by changing the subject - so to speak. & the males do ejaculate - it is watery & whitish. |
