Hi there!!!
I think by taking it as slow as you think the bird needs you'll both be happy in the long run...What are you feeding him? Pellets are the best option...if he's not on pellets, I'd reccommend converting him first, so you can use seeds as incentive...
It's easy to stress a new bird out, so find his favorite treats and make sure they only come from you. Every morning when you wake your birdy up, try giving him a nice treat in the palm of your hand, let him come to you, this may take some time, but eventually that treat will get too hard to resist. After Your birdy has started coming right to you for treats you can start to either get him to step up on a stick or your hand....it's always nice to have them stick trained along with being used to your hands...Never force him to do something he doesn't want to do, unless his life may be in danger of course
offer your hand and with the other offer a treat...make sure he knows he's got to get on that other hand before the treat is his....
You may get bitten a few times at first, but just don't make a big deal about it...if he bites you, put him away and turn your back on him for a short period of time, the worse punishment you can give to a bird is ignore him. Yelling and making a fuss will only reward biting, and can make the problem worse. If he wants your attention, he'll know he's got to be a good bird.
By taking it one day at a time and moving very slowly, I believe he'll learn to trust you. A way I found to better my bond with my birds is to spend time with them everyday teaching them tricks and things like that....Keep his mind working and give him something to do, so he knows being with you=FUN!!! There will be good days and bad days...but don't let anything discourage you...having an older bird is a challenge and very rewarding all at once. It may take some time, but if it's not easy, you'll learn to appreciate him more when he does come around...
GOOD LUCK!!
If you have any more questions, don't be afraid to ask!

Well, I think you need to build a bond first.. I wouldn't let someone touch me right away either. |
