parakeets not getting along  Reply with quote

I have two parakeets. The first one, Charlie, I sort of inherited from my sister when she went to college in a different city. I was away during the day a lot so I decided to get Charlie a companion. I brought Tink home and I had them in separate cages at first until they got used to each other. It's been over a year now and although they are both living in the same cage now, they don't seem to get along. I'm fairly certain they are both females (both their cere’s are brown/pinkish). They fight over everything. I have two of everything for them but they still peck each other in the head and pull on each other's tail feathers. Neither bird was hand raised and I think both were purchased from Petsmart. Also, Tink, the younger one has this screech that is driving me INSANE!! It's not a screech like she's threatened. I think she's trying to sing but it is one of the most shrill, piercing noises I've ever heard! And now, Charlie (who has a beautiful voice) hardly sings at all. If I can't get them to get along and Tink to stop the screeching I'm going to have to find a different home for her (Tink)! Any advice? Question

If they are both females, it's fairly normal for them to not like each other. female budgies tend to be the more aggressive ones and the males tend to be a lot more mellower. I have 24 budgies, and the girls pick on each other constantly. I just make sure that the little bickering don't turn into a full on war (which has happened once because they were fighting over a male).

The shrill you're talking about, is that like an 'ack ack ack' angry dolphins kinda noise? if it is, that is just her being protective. Most of my budgies will chirp softly when they are content, but will let out a series of 'acking' if they feel like their space has been invaded others. I can't think of other screeching you might be talking about. Oh wait, there's another screech, but that only happens when one budgie has been shoved off it's 'position' wherever it may be... like loosing a fight kinda screech.

Do you have pics of your budgies? depending on mutations, pink can mean boy as well. Very Happy

Bih,
Interesting. I didn't know that about female Budgies... I just wrote homebird about how well her budgie gets along with the new one, and I thought that was just typical for any and all budgies!

Julie,
Male budgies will usually readily accept newcomers with open wings. females do that as well, but they are more likely to have their little bicker. I have females that will bicker their little head off for a few minutes then back to preening each other the next.. they are odd... hehe... but I have two pairs that live indoor together in a cage at the moment, and the two females tolerate each other, but will not 'hang out' together in the same part of the cage.. the boys, well they get on like house on fire with everyone in the cage! Smile

Tink noises  Reply with quote

Hello again, I don't have any current pics of my birds. My camera broke Sad. The pics I do have a from when Tink was a baby. The sound Tink makes isn't an ack-ack-ack sound. I've heard that noise before. She also does the contented little warble noises when she's content, they both do. I think the noise she makes is an excited one maybe? It's like she's trying to sing and she's just bad at it. She makes the same noises when I put on music for them to listen to. Have you ever had any parakeets that just had annoying voices? I'm not completely familiar with parakeets so I don't know. Even when Charlie sings along loudly it sounds pleasant. In fact, I'd love to hear more of her but it seems like Tink is making so much noise that Charlie can't get a word in edgewise. It's like Tink is one of those contestants on Idol who really really thinks she's a great singer and she really really isn't.

Are you sure both are female? - can you tell us why you say this? Does their cere change colour? What colour are their ceres??

I have 2 males - they fight a bit - over, 'what's mine' & 'back off, i need space'. They do feed each other first thing in the morning - Laker is mature [maybe 3-4yrs old] & Rio is 2months old & therefore get s the feedings.

How long have they been together? - you said you've had them a year (?) but they're different ages - did they come from the same place or different breeders? They may still be deciding who's the dominant one.

Looking at your original statement [again]

Regarding screaming - both of my birds will get carried away a number of times in the day. If one is on my shoulder i think i'll go deaf from the noise! Rolling Eyes Rio - the baby definately shouts or screams at Laker in frustration, then they usually fly around like mad men until they're worn out & sit together & preen or eat..

When there was only one Budgie it was a lot quieter - he'd sing away to the radio or serenade me or tell me long & involved Budgie stories. He still does.
