hehe, well yeah, it's a bit hard for Lemon to rule the house with a terror that is ten times his size in it.. LOL..

Although you would think one of my three cats would rule the house, but nope, they are absolutely petrified of the king. they run for their life when Apollo is heading their way!! LOL

Size doesn't matter, Bih! At least, not here! Shocked Scuttle will let himself be chased away by Iago & Wheezy but he does throw Zazu off his gym. Rolling Eyes

Zazu's rank is above Iago & Wheezy but under Scuttle.
Wheezy is above Scuttle, but under Iago & Zazu.
And Scuttle is above Zazu, but under Iago & Wheezy??

Very strange??

Hi Fluffy Sue, you are SUCH a good observer. Did you know that that is exactly what researcher observing parrots in the wild have found. There is no clear cut hierarchy. Rather shows of dominace (ugh horrible word) are driven by the situation, usually limited resources.

What do you mean with this:

HI,

well I often find that dominance is used colloquially in a context that is not exactly beneficial to the animal concerned.

On the IAABC we recently had a panet discussion regarding dominance - it was shown that even between experts there is no clear curt definition for the word. It is often used in terms of hierarchie or to define any number of behavioural issues (not problems - but issues to the owners). SUch as - my dog growled at me, he is trying to be dominant, I have to show him who the boss is. My parrot screams at me, he is tryingto be dominant, I need to show him who the boss is, etc.

These kinds of statemnts indicate an adversarial positioning of animal and owner, often being used as an excuse for adversarial measures, i.e. punishment which often enough have animal welfare relevancy. People hit, shake, cover, squirt (and probably some other things i am not even aware of) their parrots in order toestablish dominance. To my those measures are abusive and have no place in a mutually respectful and loving relationship. I lay the blame with the word "dominance". In cónsultations, I usually see a complete shift inthe owners behaviour when I explaing ot them for example, that theri bird is not trying to be dominant, but is afraid or stressed. Viewing the issue at hand in that way, alows the owner to approach it differently altogether - with a real chance at rasolution and no abuse of the animal.

That is why I react so allergically to the word dominance: it üuts bird and owner ina position where problem solvng is difficult, the realtionship is seen as adversarial and often leads to abuse of some sort.

Ann.

Thanks for explaining.. Smile

??? I don't think the word 'dominance' in parrots isn't implying that you are allowed to shake or hit your parrot or abuse it in any way! Shocked

Figaro THINKS shes top bird, she's above aloha, but sometimes he can get a little pushy and fight with her and she'll be like "HOW DARE YOU!" and attack him a little, but they share millet..sharing swings isn't something they do..so they each have a separate one.. Laughing

Petrie is below Cheekie. Petrie doeasn't deal with the budgies. Cheekie dislikes Figaro, but he likes all other small birds?? i think its cuz she divebombs him Laughing
