Sleeping with head in feathers  Reply with quote

YES! Zazu now sleeps with his head in his feathers during the afternoon!
He didn't do that.. I think it's because I have rearranged his cage.

He now shares his cage (with an acrylic divider designed for his cage) with Scuttle. He is in the half fartest from the door.
I have given him some privacy by hanging toys & a piece of cloth in front of some of his perching areas. And with success! Now he retreats when he wants to take a nap. Very Happy

It's funny that for the most part it is hard to catch our larger fids tucked into their feathers but all the small ones I have seen them. I agree they are utterly precious when they nap this way. One time I caught Dawn like this. It looked rather odd as she had no feathers to tuck into.....poor baby. Sad still looked cute though. Smile

Ahhh poor Dawn.. But I bet she indeed looked cute.. Smile
Carrie is there any chance Dawn will gain some of her feathers? How do you do things with the temperature?

Tucking the beak into the feathers is a thermoregulatory mechanism just like tucking one leg up into the chest feathers and fluffing out the contour feathers Smile It is cute though when they sleep like that. Smile

Dawn will never grow feathers again where there are none, she has pluck them to long.

So far we have not had any problems with Dawn. Except two times....

The first trip in our RV (motor home). It was early spring and we did not thinkof a heater at night. We went north, and it got cold up there at night, I tried to light the heater for the RV. But the heater would not light. There was nothing we could do but bundle up, so I got Dawn and she happly spent the rest of the night tuck in our bed.. The next day we went and bought a elec portable heater.

The the other time when we were having our heater in the house worked on and the temp droped down, so again Dawn had a lovly night in bed with us... We had elc heaters in the bird room so they all keeped warm, but I was afride to live dawn out..

Yeah it's definitely cute! But is it necessary? As you said it has to do with the thermoregulatory mechanism?

Yes it's purpose is to maintain internal body temperature. Just like when we get cold we put socks and gloves on, birds tuck their legs up and tuck their beak into the feathers, as well as fluff up. It doesn't mean they're cold, it just means since they're inactive while perching or napping their metabolism is slower they have to maintain body temperature in other ways.
