Hi everybody, I have a male senagel approx 1 year old. He is really starting to try my patience. He will go to his food bowl and kick out food onto the floor, and he has gotten territorial about his food bowl and tries to bite when you are putting food in. I have no idea about what to do, over all he is a good bird and gets lots of love and attention. He has toys in his cage and appears healthy. There is no pattern to his behavior. He knows that he has done wrong because if you go to correct him by saying "no" he runs up to the top perch. Thought maybe just breeding season??? don't know any suggestions would be helpful. Thanx |

Hello fyrfyter53 and welcome to fluffies I'm not sure about how to get him to stop his behavior but did you maybe consider getting him an enclosed food dish with a small opening at the bottom so he doesn't have access to all his food at once? He'll have to pick through it to get what he likes. Then maybe after a few months of eating out of it he'll forget his old habit and you'll be able to reintroduce his old dish and see how he does. Good luck! |

Sometimes something as simple as moving the dish an help some of the agression problems. Its not what I would consider a permanaent fix, but it used to work short term with our sennie. |

ya know, a lot of birds out there find that 'dumping food' is great fun!! All my birds are like that... my budgies love to dump the whole food/water container if they can get it off the side of the cage!! Apollo scoops a whole beak full and fling it everywhere then he'll turn and look at me as if to say 'yes? what did I do??' or 'that was fun!'... there's just something about the sound of object hitting the cage bottom!! LOL...
The only thing that worked for me so far is only giving a little handful at a time... like just enough for him to eat... once he's done eating, i fill a little more up for little bit of snack. If it's more than a handful, he'll dig right in!!
May be you senegal just realised how fun it is to listen to food falling!! LOL... then again, may be not. |
