Just hanging out beside the cage & chatting & not looking directly at the bird all the time, will help his nervousness. Use slow and careful hand movements & stop as soon as they appear to be frightened.
fear is what you're dealing with.
~ all the advice so far is great. I hope that you will see good results soon - but sometimes these things can take a very long time. So try & prepare yourself. I've found my own homepage & diaries/journals in particular to be very helpful - when i look back i can see all the changes that have occurred - it helps on the bad days.
I was just given some amazing links on bird training & behavior - really it about human training & behavior, as we are theones who must change the way w do things around birds. They are wild animals & never will be like a cat or a dog - who in many cases have been bred for centuries to tolerate our ways.
here are the links:

hope you have the time & energy to read them. I have them in my fav. links under training. |

That's wonderful news! - so happy the training has gone well.
I find when my guys are driving me a bit mad - it pays to go back to the basics & ask others for help. I often forget some of the most obvious things & wonder why.
The best training aid is to just hang out with your guys & ask nothing from them. They will pester you in no time for attention.
Learning body language of your birds is eventually second nature.
Don't forget that special toy or food - it really helps get them to do what you want.
Hope you have lots of fun stories to share & photos, now things are getting better. |
