weird behavior last night  Reply with quote

has this happened to anyone?

Sake jumped out of his night-tme cage last night, oh about 2am: my boyfriend woke me up to tell me he heard him on the floor. so i got up and turned on the light and sure enough, there was my jumper. i picked him up and he came right on my arm and started asking for cuddles. i tried to put him back in his sleeping cage but he wouldn't get off my arm. so i kept him on my arm and went and got a drink. etc, cuddled him for a bit, then tried again. no go - absolutely refused to go back in sleep cage, and he has NEVER refused to go in there before. i ended up lying back down with Sake on my arm and i fell alseep like that. i woke up a couple times and tried again, no go. finally at about 4am i got Sake to go on TOP of his cage - still would not go inside. when i got up an hour later, he was still in the same place, and happily came off onto my arm. i brought him down to main cage and he is sitting on one of the perches outside the cage with his head tucked back in his wings, napping (he opens his eyes now and again and peeks at me).

something must have scared him, don't you think? any ideas??

Sounds like something just scared him, maybe a moth or something flew into his cage and flapped around him a bit. You know, his private space was invaded. Give him a couple days and reassure him that all is ok. He "should" be fine.

As far as the sleeping thing, I'm sure he lost a lot of sleep that night and had some catching up to do.

I'm sorry dim, I can't recall, what kind of bird is Sake?

Whenever I place anything new in my 'tiels cage, he goes out on the perch outside the cage door & wont go back in for hours!

Hey Dim,

I'm sure there's nothing too serious about it, may be it is just as everyone's said that something's scared him a bit and I'm not sure what Grey is like, but I know most birds once they are scared, they'll need to settle down first and be reassured that everything is ok.

Is Sake's cage not closed when you go to bed? Just wondering how he jumped out of his cage that's all. Smile

My lorikeets used to startle and flap around at night so I'd leave a nightlight on for them. My Picasso gets his night light too (it's on a timer but there are light activated ones too) have you changed anything in or around his cage lately that he is not used to yet? Mine also hated bugs in their cage, they were terrified of them.

thanks for the responses!  Reply with quote

sorry it has taken me so long to get back - classes have started and that keeps the professors as busy (or more) than the students...Very Happy i love the start of the semester though - it is fun to get to know everyone and see if i can keep them awake! Smile

Sake is a grey. the thing that made the behavior surprising was that *nothing* was changed (at least from the viewpoint of a human - but who knows about a bird's?).

update: he was fine yesterday, although i was gone much of the day and when i came back i was too tired to do much but hang out quietly with him, but he was very much as he usually is. when it was time for bed, he went easily - lately he protests and wants to stay downstairs with us - and then went right into the "scary" cage. and he stayed there fine all night. i just now brought him downstairs and all seems normal. he also ate well yesterday, and played and seemed happy. so - you all must be right, it was just something that scared him, he needed the reassurance, and hopefully all willl be well now.
whoosh. fids!
