| birdie airplane carriers? |
|
|
hi everyone,
as some of you may already know, i'm gearing up for a big move this summer - i've been looking into travel carriers for mollybird, but i'm having trouble finding one that is both airline-approved and has no metal parts and will fit under a seat (so that I can take it into the cabin with me) I have one metal one that we used to travel with, but it is no longer allowed (b/c of the metal bars)
the closest thing I have found to what I am looking for is here:

but it is extremely expensive! i would love to hear your experiences with bird airline travel, and also any carry case suggestions you might have!
thanks

Oh wow, goodness, that is a bit of an expense isn't it!! Eeek...
May be give the airline a ring and see what they can do... I know that over hear, the airlines rent out crates and stuff for pet owners when they have to travel with them. Or otherwise, just ask them for anything specific that is approved by them. I'm not sure how helpful they would be though. Good luck with it. |

What about a kitten carrier, will they fit under the seat? I drilled a few holes in mine to fit a perch and some dishes. I've got a bigger one now my too Picasso is grown up, it only cost me $20 from the discount shop, it's good for travelling and staying overnight too. |

Hi Mollybird,
I have travelled quite a lot in the USA with Linus (Eclectus) on airlines.
I purchased a carrier from PetSmart (yes, I hate them, but.. they were the only place that had an airline approved carrier).
the brand is Petmate it is all plastic except for small pins holding the hinges together. it is actually made for smaller animals like a guinea pig but it is plenty big for Linus for several hours.
I do not use a perch, only a towel in the bottom. no water in the carrier but moist fruits like apple and grapes.
I was still required to remove Linus from the carrier and carry him through the security metal detector while the carrier was X-rayed.
Just let them know you have a live animal. The security people always send his carrier through immediately so he is only out of the carrier for a couple of minutes.
What country are you traveling in? In the USA it was required that I go to the vet not more than 10 days before the trip for a complete physical and got a USDA Animal Health Certificate signed by the vet.
Be sure to get your bird used to the new carrier before the trip.
most airlines have information on their web sites about pet rules.
Good luck,
Genny |
