Flight Suit Alternatives  Reply with quote

Hi! I bought Pico a flight suit. I can rub it all over him, leave it around him while he's climbing on me, etc. But he WILL NOT let me put it on him.

What other alternatives do I have? I want to be able to tether him somehow so that I can take him outside with me. Thanks!

I got an Aviator harness, it came with an instructions DVD, While it is still somewhat fiddly to get it on we can get it on.

Basically the DVD not only says to let your bird get used to the harness as you describe in your post but also to do the actions of putting the harness on without the harness.

This means,
holding and lifting the wing like you would do to get the harness over the wing.
give a command like "wing" hold the wing up and count down loud from 3 to 1 and let go of the wing, and reward.
Nest step wait a bit longer before starting to count. step after start counting when the bird starts to resist.

Also get the bird used to having something going over his head if it is needed to put the flightsuit on. you can do this by giving for example a command like "head" and making a O with your fingers and gentely pushing the O over his head.

3rd thing is while putting a harness on you tend to push the bird off balance. this can be learned much the same way as the wing lifting.

And of course it helps to try and put the harness on in an unfamiliar environment.

And these trainings have the added benefit of being usefully for vet visits.

hope it helps.

If you look through old fluffies posts, there were some on clipping which lead to interesting comments by Shanlung. He left an address where he showed how to make and put on a flight harness. His homepage may also have a link to it.
