Your cage is sooo cool! I just love the little platform inside it..
Perhaps you can put a plate of wood over the platform? Or paper? Else you'll have to scratch the poop of the platform which will be pretty much work I think!
Your swing is awesome by the way!
I like yours better.. Hmmm, you used hemp? I will also remember the beads you put there.. |

shirin- The cage was $130 with free shipping for the continental US. I don't know how much shipping to Canada (your in Canada right?) would be, but I don't think it would be too bad. And thank you for the compliment. I worked hard to wrap the hemp tightly on that swing.
Cathy- Thank you. I like the latch also. And if my baby figures it out, there is a least room to put a lock.
Fluffy Sue- I think covering the platform is a good idea. It is removeable but I don't want to risk scratching the powder coating more than need be. Maybe I'll use paper. I can easily clean it that way. Is colored construction paper ok for birds? Or is that ink poisonous? If so I'll use plain white paper. And thank you! I liked your swing so much I had to make one. I did use hemp. I hope that it will hold up to some chewing. LOL

Hey Wysteria,
Great looking cage!! I think you've done a great job looking and researching prior to getting it. and what a bargain!! Pity about the broken tray though, just a hassle getting that changed that's all.
Yes the latch is the same as Apollo's cage. Apollo can open it in two seconds flat from the inside, so I have to padlock it!! LOL... which is why it's good like you said that it's able to be locked up.
Just a thought on the platform. if you don't want to run to risk of scraping the powder coating, try mixing vinegar and hotwater (50/50), and spray it on to the poop that is caked on to the bar. Leave it for two to three minutes, then just wipe it off with paper towels!! It's that easy!! That's how I get all of Apollo's poop off the bottom grate to his cage. Some may need two spray of the vinegar mixture, but it'll come off without having to scrub it that's all. I was thinking that since Lovies just love to shreds, I don't think the paper will hold up too well that's all.. though it's a good idea to cover it.
And oh, I love the swing you made by the way. Gives me idea for my budgies aviary. Though I don't think I have anymore space for hanging toy like that at the moment!!! LOL...
Cheers...

Hi there, I don't know what construction paper is? I think normal white paper would be fine, I heard another member using butcher paper? (I'm not sure if I say it correctly)
I don't think the swing will be easily destroyed.. That is if you not decide also to get a Sennie! (Iago is a terrible destroyer!) |

Yes Sue, it's butcher paper. The paper that they use to print newspaper on. I get the end of the roll from printing company for free...but that's coz I get it through my work which is a non-profit organisation working with high schools running teenage seminars. I've read somewhere that you can buy the end roll off them for quite cheap too!! So you might like to look around Wysteria and see what you can find. I use it to line to bottom of the cage. It's good because it's such a big piece, it covers the bottom tray with extras!! I found that using newspaper was a hassle when i came to changing/cleaning time coz you have to move the pieces individually, or I'd drop alot of stuff on the floor. But with the one full piece, I just wrap them all up inside, and off they go. It's great that way.
Construction paper should be fine as far as I know, they are non toxic. |

I'll have to see if the local newspaper here sells the end rolls and how much they charge. I'll definitely try the vinegar and water trick for sure!
I actually tried to scratch the powder coating on purpose, on the stand part, not the cage itself. And it's strong, harder to scratch than I thought! At least with my fingernails. The powder coat is textured, but slick and that seems to help keep it from being scratched. I still plan on being careful not to ruin my cage, but at least I won't be so paranoid now. LOL!

lol, Apollo IS a messy bird and he KNOWS it and PROUD of it too! He's forever tossing things out of his food bowls...and he loves doing it! the best part of his day really. As soon as i put food in, comes over gets what he wants then tosses the rest out!! What a wasteful bird!
So yes having those paper given to me without charge is great!! and one end roll usually last me a fair while too! At least 50 changes anyway... currently i have two pretty big rolls sitting there. I won't be running out anytime soon for sure. |

hey Wys,
Yes those powder coating is quite strong. My cockatoo Apollo absolutely loves to try to pull his day cage apart, but He hasn't quite figure out how to yet. He's been chewing on the bar and the joints and stuff quite a bit, but there's still no chip anywhere on the cage that I can see... With such a strong beak, i thought that he would have chipped it quite quickly, but that is not the case, which what i'm quite thankful for, as i'm not wanting to buy another cage for him in a hurry!! LOL
Yes please do give the vinegar and water solution a try! I works so well. Sometimes I get lazy, and i don't properly clean the bottom grate... Just the tray... so all the poop just kinda cake up where he usually rest, and the mixture/solution get it off in no time!! though with three or four application though by that time!! LOL. But i have never had to scrub his cage yet!! Works like a charm i say!! |
