Perches  Reply with quote

Good Morning Guys

Just got some q's regarding perches, not too sure if the answers are in the General Forum. Sue maybe you can help me with this.

1. what is the best and safest way to clean dirty perches?

2. How many perches should the cage have, it is a fairly large cage and I want to give diego a few perches to run around on but I don't want to clutter the cage with too many things.

Thanks

1. I'd rub them off with very hot water.. Smile That's the safest I think?
I wouldn't get the branches from trees near a road.. Smile

2. I think at least two. But you can always decide to add more (Shorter) perches so that they have easier access to toys etc.

There are perches that don't go the whole way across the cage, about 6-12 inches long. 2-3 full length perches. Different sized and texture and rope perches which are bendy and flexable. The same size perches are hard on their feet. To clean a perch I use hot water and occasionaly use antibacterial soap and an old butter knife or paint scraper and an old tooth brush.

Sue,

I don't mean to sound like a know it all because I know enough to know I need to know so much more then I do know, now that I am confessus....

Wild branchs are usually not a good idea here in the USA, no telling what has been sprayed on them. I only use branches from my back yard that I know are safe. Then Carrie Bakes them in the oven at about 250% for about 1 to 2 hours to kill anything in them.

We then as CM says, use alot of half size, and smaller perches that go in a conner and around food and water dishes. Usally we put one maybe two full size perches..

I use apple cider vinegar mixed with water if I want to clean perches from bird poo and then rinse them with hot water...I read that the apple cider vinegar kills bacteria and is safe for the birds.
