I went to PetSmart (where I almost never go) to get a dog toy for Mom's Rascal.
There was this very sad U2. He did nt look well. He has been picking his feathers and he was all fluffed-up like he was cold. I felt so sorry for him, but I do not have room in my 1 bedroom apartment for another bird.
I am so mad because I thought the the chain pet stores were no going to sell large birds anymore. He did not even have 1 toy.
I complained to the store manager and tried to explain that such an intelligent bird (all birds) must have toys. The feather picking will only get worse and then no one will buy him, I told the manager. I also told him to have an avain vet check the bird or at the very least to have the store vet check the bird as the fluffed behavior is not normal.
So I did not get a dog toy. I will not spend another $ in Pet smart. |

That is too bad I think it was just petco that agreed to not sell large birds anymore, I'm not sure if petsmart and petco are under the same company. but even Petco's agreement to not sell large birds anymore is pretty useless, because they still sell Goffins cockatoos, which are just as demanding as the larger cockatoos, |

It was Petco who agreed to not sell large birds. They stopped because of campaign launched by PETA. |

I don't think we have them here Kellyanne. The big chains here as far as I know are Super Pet, PJs and Pet Smart. |

The PetSmart near me is ok, but the bigger birds seem bored. I don't think many people take them out to play. Otherwise it's pretty good. The birds don't pluck or anything, they just seem to sleep alot. They have food and toys and perches and all that. I might try to get a job there so I can play with the birds. |

That sounds like a great idea Cheekie. Birds need human interaction. |

It would be nice if they would let you play with the birds, but believe me, I got a job in the bird department and all I did all day was clean cages, I wasn't allowed to play with the birds because there was work to do. And another thing is petstores that are all clean and the birds look well taken care of ect aren't all that they seem. I had pretty high opinions of the store I worked at, until I saw things from the inside. I don't know if you've read my post "the truth about petstores", but those are just some of the things that went on. It was so bad that eventually I felt disgusted with myself for working there and I finally quit.
By the way another thing that I found curious was that we had to clean the cages twice a day with a bleech solution while the birds were in the cages They could breathe in th solution and lick the bars right after you just put this bleach stuff on them. Another example of how the birds health was compromised for the sake of appearances.
Cheekie if you really wanna do it just for the sake of spending time with the animals and don't care about the money (which is an insulting minimum wage anyway), you can ask to volunteer for that job. I've seen people at the petstore in Yorkdale mall do that. I don't know if you've ever been to that one, but they are so overcrowded with animals that the store smells like poop. There's no way the employees would ever have time to play with the animals since they don't even have time to clean all the poop The purpose of the volunteers is to take out the animals and walk them around the store to entice people to buy them by displaying how cute and cuddly they are But of course you could just do it so that the animals could get some out of cage time |

Shirin I'ld love to do that! I don't really want money for it, I just want the poor birds in the store to be allowed to be played with.
I saw a quaker there the other day. Poor little guys feathers were in awful condition!! and 2 tiels, one's tail was damaged.
Thats disgusting about how they left the birds in the cage while you cleaned. some people!
I hope the U2 at the store ekkiemom talked about, I hope someone bought him. I know its just giving the pet store more profit, but I can't see another way. if talking to the manager won't work.

I stop by Petsmart once in a while to buy toys for my birds since they have a better supply than Petcetera. Overall I never had any complains against the way birds were looked after at that store. The cages were always clean, not overcrowded, and had a lot of toys in them. Usually I get what I want without asking for help, but I needed some assistance when I was going away with the birds in October. I needed travel cages and some accessories to go with them. There were these two very young girls (about 15 years old or so) working in that section and they had no clue what I was asking for, and what a travel cage was Finally I found it on my own and asked if they could assemble it for me. And again they had no clue I asked them if there is ANYBODY in the store who knows how to do it, and finally one of them went to get somebody else.
I have nothing against very young people trying to earn some cash, but when it comes to pet shops, I think they need to employ people who have at least some BASIC knowledge on the stuff they are selling.
I usually buy seeds for my birds at Petcetera. The only reason for that is that it is on my way home from work. I hate that store though The birds are always in bad condition and their cages are lined up with newspapers There are also no toys in the bird cages Ugh... |

Thats awful Papug. Some people shouldn't be working around birds when they don't even know what you're talking about.
Petcetera..I went there once..it doeasn't have a very good selection and it always seems deserted..I don't know if its just me..and the birds are kept behind plexiglass in those big plastic-rock aviary type things.. |

The Petcetera that I go to keeps birds in cages, not behind a glass. The cages are large, aviary type, but often overcrowded, especially when it comes to budgies, canaries and other small birds. There are no toys what-so-ever in the cages and most of them are lined up with newspapers
Also, right next to birds are hamsters, mice, rats, bunnies and other rodents for sale. I actually find them cute but I think they should be kept in a separate section of the store. Mixing them up with birds is just not right |

U2 are often in bad situation's - few people have the skill or experience to look after them. Do you have any idea of the birds age or if it was in a molt? Poor diet, lack of bathing, breeding problems, allergies, poor lighting - there could be a million reasons it looked poorly.
YOu don' t know why that store had him - maybe to sell for a customer - it could be any reason. I admit i don't like to see a store with a pet they don't know how to care for.
It was great that you spoke up & maybe that will help the bird. i know of a person who talked to the owners of a store & got very positive things to happen. |
