believe me....I once was an active member of PETA and a vegetarian.....but I couldn't handle the uncertainty of it all....when you have people telling you that PETA makes everything up...but you still think they are right, it takes a huge toll on your self-esteem....and since I am so young and gullible, I decided to take a break from everything. I had to start eating meat again, because I became severly anemic, and I was just so sick all the time.....
I think it's wonderful that you and people like you, and pretty much everyone here is so passionate about this......I still don't eat at restaurants that were mentioned by PETA or shop anywhere mentioned by PETA.... I know that it is a horrible world out there for some animals, and it needs to stop, but, selfishly, and for my own sake, I'd rather focus on the positive things, like John and Carrie, and everyone else on this website.
with my life so full of negativity, right now, just isn't the right time for me to make myself feel worse.
I fully support and understand everything you have said, Shirin, and in time I will be able to pursue my feelings as well, but now just isn't the right time. I am human, and I am a bit selfish, like we all are sometimes....
I'm sure everyone can understand that feeling. |

Lynzie, you are young with a lot to learn. Fluffies is the place to keep your spirits up and to learn from others. Don't let too many things get you down in life, its not worth the worry. Just take care of yourself and your fids. The rest will come in time. Its okay to be selfish once in a while. |

Um..ok? Because You were able to pet a sun conure through the bars, that means it's a good store?!?? That was just one example of a bad story about Petco, but believe me, it's not the only one do some research |

I have 2 Petco stores near me. The closest one and the oldest one is a small store with not very much room and the birds were kept in very small cages or aquarium type tanks. There isn't much selection on bird items. The second one is newer and very much larger with a wide assortment of bird items. The birds themselves are in roomy cages inside a special room. There is viewing glass to see the birds but people can't get to them and play with them. It is for the birds protection when the workers can't be there to watch over them. Their cages are kept very clean and the birds have an assortment of toys to play with. What is really nice is that they are not crowded in the cages. That is what bothers me the most the overcrowding and filthy conditions of some of the petstores. Birds are healthier when well taken care of and not overcrowded. I of course shop at the newer Petco. |

There's a Super Pet that I often visit, just to see the birds. Super Pet is like the Canadian version of Petco, and just as bad. What bothers me most is the way these big chain petstores clean the bigger parrot's cages obsessively and give them toys and even take the birds out once in a blue moon all so that the customer is let do believe they are well taken care of. But then all the small birds are neglected. Their waters are usually filthy and filled with poop. A lot of the finches are plucking eachother, because they're forced to live with other males in really tiny cages. The lovebirds are never handled and are mostly wild, and so no one wants to buy them, and so they sit there in those tiny cages day in day out. The cockatiels all have their tails broken off or shredded from being stuck to the cage bars 24/7 from wanting to come out. The canaries are kept in tiny cages the size of a fish bowl, often a few of them are kept by themselves. Most people don't notice these things, becaue they see how clean the store is other wise and how the bigger parrots are in big cages with toys, and so they're impressed, and fail to notice the little things that are wrong. It breaks my heart to see the conditions that the smaller birds live in. It also breaks my heart how if one of the finches gets out of the cage while they're cleaning it, they just let it starve to death instead of trying to catch it. All because of how much they stand to profit from that bird. If it's a cheap bird, to hell with it Sorry, but I have tons and tons of bad stories about these so called "clean" stores that put their parrots in big cages and give them toys. After having worked at one of them and having seen things from the inside, I know that they don't give a rat's behind about the health or well being of any of their animals, and that bad things still hapen, just behind the scenes. One example is the fact that they use bleach to clean the cages, twice a day while the birds are still in their cages. The cage looks nice and shiny for the customers, but the bird has to breathe in that bleach, and have his lifespan shortened, because the store owner thinks if there's no dust on the cage, people will think we take good care of our birds. |

I agree with you Shirin. I also worked for a petstore years ago. It was called Petland and yes they also sprayed the cages with a bleach mix with the birds still in the cages. I think it scared the birds when doing that. Also when they used a heavy duty vacum to clean out the dirty cage shavings from the parakeets large container or even the hamsters, the employees thought it was funny when the small animal got sucked up into the vacum. They then would open up the vacum to see if the poor hamster or parakeet survived. It was a great trauma for them. The other animals didn't fair well either. Even when I went there after quitting, to get bird food, I noticed a dead parakeet at the bottom of the overcrowded cage. When I pointed it out to an employee, they were quite mad and rude about it. I have never gone back since. I now purchase my supplies from the bird fair or from reputable companys on the internet. |

I went into a pet store called Trent Pet, and they spelled "Rosella" wrong. They spelt it "Rossella". there is one good person who worked there, tho I never saw her there, she goes to my bird club and has 30 birds.
at the Trent Pet, there was a tiel with a large bald patch on the back of its neck. They had a cage, ment for like 2 or maybe 3 tiels, stuffed with about 10 or 15 tiels. I know some tiels have a genetic bald patch, but this one was much too large. I phoned and they said "oh its a fledgling" .
some pet stores..I have seen other horrid stores..I won't gio into them... |

sibster, thanks for posting the website. I read the stories, especially the ones on PetStar. Very uplifting. I think birds have a great deal of personality and are very loving, just as much as cats and dogs. |

Yes that is awful Teri!! Poor birds and hampsters being sucked into vacuums!!! Why would those people be working at a pet store if they don't love animals and laugh when the poor thing is almost killed, or killed??!?! |

Yes Haley I was soooo shocked when a male employee sucked up a poor parakeet into the vacum. I told him it was cruel and viscious and how would he like bing sucked up like that. I just feel so sorry for the animals being sold in petstores. They aren't healthy at all and they are not treated well. I only worked ther while in school for about 6 mos. It was not a friendly place to work. The manager was horrible |
