It is so shocking to hear some of these things happen. I use to work at Super Pet and I know that if any bird was bitten like that it was taken to the vet (at least at my Super Pet). Though we never had a finch attack so I can't really say any bird for sure. We did have a budgie though that was taken because it injured its leg. We also got in a conure which had collapsed air sacs from another Super Pet. The vet said this was caused by physical trauma. He was such a sweet bird and it was so sad to think someone had physically abused him at another store.
Sadly, the breeders that the animals come from are no good too. There was a lovebird breeder who was blacklisted because out of the 30 we got from her only 4 survived. They had some respiratory problems that even the strongest medications they could take weren't working. Unfortunately, someone decided to believe her a year later that she had changed her ways and took 20 baby lovebirds from her. Well, again only 4 survived. Another breeder (whose name I really want to give out as he is awful) sent 3 rose crowned conures into the chain of which 2 died from Aspergillosis. Thankfully the little guy in our store didn't get symptoms and found a nice home. Rose crowns are such sweet little conures. I don't even want to get into the small animal problems we have had due to bad breeders.
Another thing I find is that the quality of care the animals receive really depended on the supervisor of the department. If they cared about the animals then things got done well. If they favoured certain animals in their department, then those were the ones who got the best care and this left others to be overlooked at times. If the person only cared about commission, then they made everything look nice, but didn't discourage people who were idiots from buying birds.
I will try to list the pros and cons of the store I worked at. I would like to say this only applies to the Super Pet I worked at.
Pros: cages were clean, papers were done daily, waters were done daily, sick animals were taken to the vet most of the time, birds are bathed 3 times a week, birds get veggies/fruits/pasta/bean (if it isn't too busy), used high concentration hydrogen peroxide to clean cages(its suppose to be bird safe)
Cons: birds lack attention unless employees take them out during lunch, birds don't always go to good homes, expensive birds are prioritized over less expensive birds, small birds (finches/budgies) live in crowded, conditions, "handfed" lovebirds/cockatiels don't get any attention, over priced, bad breeder/uncertain of birds health, not enough staff to complete work in a timely manner
I might have missed something, but this is all I can think of right now for the store I worked at. |
