I just found this article, and thought it was an important article for everyone to read. Please don't shop at big chain petstores like petco, Pet Smart, and Super pet. Not even for your supplies. I could really relate to the part where the store employee was told by the manager to "just get rid of it", because I was told things like this on many occasions when I worked at Super pet.

Shirin,
Are you aware that last year PetCo signed an agrement with PETA (I think thats the name) that outlines Petco ethical polices regrading birds.. They had to remodel there stores and make alot of changes, They can not sale a bird larger then a Sun Conuer anymore..

Yes, I'm aware of that John, I'm a member of Peta. But since signing that agreement they have not met up with the standards they agreed to. In fact, after agreeing to no longer sell larger birds, several stores were still selling baby goffins cockatoos. When the staff at these particular stores where approached about it, they said that goffins are small-medium birds, so they don't count |

I am sorry to hear that, I know that the two PetCo stores here in Columbus treat there birds very well. The manager of one is a part of a rescue group, and all the birds there get first class treatment. But I can only speak on what I have seen and heard.

That is awful Does anybody know how little Hobbit is doing? Accidents happen to even the most experienced bird owners and its how you deal with it afterwards that matters, the words "get rid of it" nearly brought tears to my eyes

That is so horrible! I'm glad I don't shop at a big chain like that anymore (I used to buy supplies from Petsmart, which is also where I got my little guy) but since we found our bird store we have never been back there. |

I read that story quite a while ago. It is truly a sad tale. We do not normally got to Petco but once in awhile we stop in and look around. The one by us has changed a lot in taking care of birds and they no longer have anything bigger than a conure in it. We don't shop there just look around and check out the birds...... I know we went in Jack's one day and the bird cages there were just awful. John mentioned this to several employees. We went back a month or so later and everything was cleaned up. They had a new employee taking care of the animals and she was bird smart. As much as I don't like to see birds in pet stores I really also hate seeing puppies. Breaks my heart! |

Puppies are not allowed in pet stores here and neither are kittens only from breeders. Also it is rare to see anything larger than a conure in anything other than a specialised bird store.

There is actually only one chain and I can't think of its name that has puppies, birds and cats in it. All the other petstores just have cat and dog rescue adoptions in them. |

I can't read the story, because i have a weak heart and soul...and things like that (possibly ) make me so depressed for forever!! I'd feel like I'd HAVE to do something.....but anyways...
I do know that the Petco around here does not sell anything larger than Sun Conures, and I know two of the dif. store managers personally and they also are very involved with the local bird rescues and things around here.
they also get their birds from local breeders, or even families that can't keep their loving pets anymore......
I know there are some serious problems in the animal world, and they should stop, but actually, a locally owned bird store (where I bought Sonnie) is in worse condition and the animals get worse treatment there than I've ever seen in a PetCo or PetSmart.....
I think PETA is making amazing strides in the way we all care for our animals, and the big chains are making the rules......is it maybe possible that just one or two or even three individual stores aren't following the codes and rules properly? and those stores just happen to be the ones PETA and everyone checks on?
just my naive thought....
I'm only 16, and I admit that I'm ignorant...... |

What a sad story. I feel so bad for the little sennie. I hope someone tookm him in. I also don't like buying birds from petstores. They charge too much. I get my supplies from the bird fair each month or from Drs Foster and Smith online. I'll think twice about going into a petstore again. |

Lynzie it is a tough story to read. If it's any consolation, the bird was rescued and is doing great now and he even got to meet Steven Tyler from Aerosmith!
I know what you mean about having a weak heart, but reading stories like that is the only way to educate yourself and open your eyes to the realities of the petstore industry. The big chain stores are clean and animals food and waters are clean and there are toys on the cages because they are well known stores and they have to watch for their ass, otherwise they will end up in the media or PETA will be on their ass again. Believe me, they couldn't care less about the animals, as long as they are making their profit.
There's a store here in my city that in all outward appearances looks great. They have one hawkhead there who has been there for nearly 2 years, and he has plucked his feathers almost completely. No one ever takes him out to play with him, the store managers of course would never consider just handing him over to a rescue sheleter so that he could have one on one attention, even though no one will buy him since he's damaged goods now. They have dropped his price from $5000 to $4000 As if anyone is ever going to spend $4000 on a bird that is plucked and neurotic Still they are adament about keeping him locked up in that cage day in day out until perhaps someone might be willing to fork over the $4000 out of pity
Also the birds size doesn't make a difference in their intelligence and instincts. Small birds also get bored and depressed and neurotic when confined to cages. So the fact that PETCO is now only selling smaller birds is no consolation. Another sad reality is that the average person who goes to a petstore and buys a bird on impulse, and is not educated on the needs of a pet bird tends to think of smaller birds as throw away birds. Meaning because they cost less, they wouldn't spend money on medical care or proper nutrition for them, they would keep them in cages all day long, and when the novelty wears off they just get rid of them.
About whether its possible that it's just a few stores that don't follow the codes properly, you have to understand that the major problem with the pet industry is not whether they can keep cages clean and well stocked with toys, it's that they continue to put out baby birds, many of which come from bird farms much like puppy mills, then they sell the birds to any and every customer without caring to educate their customers about what is required in taking care of these birds, and thus they continue to contribute to the overpopulation of unwanted and "damaged" birds that end up in shelters.
Lynzie you are young, but you are also a very smart and compassionate animal lover from what I know of you so far. Please take the time to research and educate yourself more about animal welfare I gaurantee you that you will be shocked by what you learn, and will never want to support the industry ever again. |
