| PJ's Pets |
|
|
Yesterday I happened to be in the neighbourhood of a new PJ's pets that has just opened. PJ's is a big petstore chain that's under the same company as Super Pet in Canada. The store was really tiny, so they didn't have a lot of animals, but the most noticeable was this precious African Grey whose cage was right at the entrance. She looked to be about 2 years old. Her irises were definitely more yellow than Bunny, and Bunny is 14 months old. She looked to be in really rough shape. Her feathers were disheveled and really dull in colour, and her tail was all chewed up, and looked about half the size of Bunny's. What was most striking was the difference in the colour of her tail. Her tail didn't look red, it was like almost a dull, washed out, pink, with some grey feathers. I believe when there's colorations where there shouldn't be, like grey feathers were it's supposed to be all red, it's a sign of malnutrition, right? So I decided to see how much they would lie to me. I asked to handle her, and the guy told me that she would only bond with males because she was a female. And they had gathered that she was a female because she had bonded to a guy that worked there Mind you, I was acting ignorant like I knew nothing about birds. I asked how old she was, and they said 10 months! Impossible! At 10 months she should still have grey eyes, which she didn't. I asked if she chews her feathers, and the guy said, "oh no, she's just molting" Bunny is molting right now, and she looks NOTHING like that. I made a comment about how small her tail looked, and he got kinda nervous, and he said "oh..uh.. I think a kid pulled on her tail or something" Yeah right! It was obvious that the poor bird was chewing her own tail! I asked why she had grey in her tail, and he didn't know, and didn't answer me. I wanted to take this little bird home so bad, and feed her some good food, and give her lots of love and attention but I can't, because i have no time to devote to another bird right now |

Oh, that poor creature!! I hate hearing stories about pet stores like that. It's so amazingly disgusting how they can treat living animals with emotions like th at!
I can see why you'd wanna take the poor girl home. I would too if I had seen her there like that! Poor thing.
Is there nothing like the RSPCA in Canada that you can report to? You know some sort of humane society?? Or do they think that this is too minor to even look into? So so sad when things like this happen. |

Hi Bih,
We do have RSPCA, unfortunately the standards for pet stores aren't that hi. Technically they weren't doing anything wrong, the cage was fairly clean and she had food and water. And I guess you can't really prove that she might be getting neglected based on her appearance alone. |

Oh, that is just so sad. Actually, I think the standard is pretty low here for pet stores. The cages that shop birds get kept in can get pretty filthy, you know full of husk and stuff, but still considered as cleaned by the RSPCA.
I went into the pet store near me not too long ago, and heard a guy talking to the owner about how dirty the cage that the Store pet was, and he was saying that someone once complaint to the RSPCA and they came to have a looked and said that it was perfectly fine.. In fact they even said that it was one of the cleaner one!! HOw shocking is that! Although I must say that Ritchie the corella was quite healthy and had great feathers. |

That is terriable ! Poor grey! I know, RSPCA says the bird is ok as long as it has a cage, food and water. There were these birds kept in tiny cages in a closet and being fed the wrong food, and when the shelter I volunteer for came to rescue them they guy wanted money, so the called the RSPCA to come and get them out and the RSPCA said it was ok!!!!!
Just so you know, buying the grey would only give that store more profit and so they can keep selling birds in that condition.
it's a hard desicion, and you tried informing the guy...do you know of any avian shelters near you? Maybe you could contact them |

What a sad situation. I always feel bad for the poor birds/animals. Yet I know we can't buy them all! I was in a Petco store once where there were baby (pink) mice lost in the shavings on the side of the glass tank trying to find their way to mom. When I pointed it out they told me, "Oh yeah, that happens all the time, we can't keep moving them back." I thought now isn't THAT good for sales. Dying baby mice in the
tanks for all the customers to see! Arrgghhh!!
