| Are pencils safe? |
|
|
My QP loves to destroy any pencils she can get her beak on! Is it safe to allow her to have pencils, or should I take them all away? I don't think she eats the lead; she only cares about destroying the wood. She has stolen a good few of my pencils already, and she hasn't gotten sick from them yet, but better safe then sorry, right? Thank you for your opinions! |

Yep, they're completely safe. The lead in pencils is made from graphite, which is basically carbon, and carbon is non-poisonous.
My African Grey loooves chewing up pencils too |

yeah like Shirin said, it is now safe. It used to be made from Lead, but now they've changed it to Graphite, but it is still call lead pencil though...
a bit misleading but I guess that's what everyone's used to.

Interesting... I knew pencils were graphite, but didn't know for sure that it wasn't poisonous. My birds never had pencils, but I guess now they can |

Yep, they will love it Julie. They don't really chew the lead itself anyway, just the wood around it. But either way it's safe. Just think, carbon is in every food that we eat |
