Adopted a special needs parrotlet baby...  Reply with quote

Hey everyone, I've just brought home a Pacific Parrotlet and she's only 7.5 weeks old. I found an add saying that she was being sold by the woman who had originally bought her and "didn't know how to train her" I got her for 80 bucks (us) which is really cheap here. She's the blue mutation which usually goes for anywhere from 2-300 $. When I went to get her I immediately noticed she had a deformed left foot. When I asked about it she said it had been that way when she picked her up a week ago and when she asked the breeder she shrugged and told her she was just getting used to her band! To me it looks like one of a couple of things happened. 1 she was born that way, 2 she had a problem in the nest. maybe not enough bedding below her after hatching? or 3 they hurt her when they banded her. I mean, why would they choose to band the foot that's obviously not right?

She doens't' seem to be in any pain. It's not swollen, red, bruised, or warm to the touch. She gets around pretty well, but is a bit clumsy. I've arranged her perches so she can get from one to the other easily and the same goes for her food dishes. I notice she leans one her right foot and also will lean agains the back of the cage for support Crying or Very sad My husband is going to make her a couple of small shelf like perches so she can totally get off her feet and relax and I trying to make a sling type thing for her as I don't want to give her a tent because she's a she and all that.

Any ideas as to how to make this little sweetie as comfortable and independant as possible?

she knows how to step up and will cuddle up against my neck and beak grind. She's a bit tough to get out of the cage, but once she is she's great.

I'll add her picture to my homepage and try to get a good pic of her foot too.

Oh, and her name is Isabelle Sky (yea, I'm a geek, but all my fids have a first and middle name so figured she should too...just ended up that way)

How brave of you to take care of her. She must have suffered quite a lot if I read well. I am sure that she will have a very hapy live with you.
keep her warm and you are already doing everything to make everything as comfortable as possible. when she is bigger she will be more independant, don't worry. give her lots and lots of love. in return you will get lots of love from her.

This could very well be a deformity that she was born with, and if so, you needn't worry too much. Birds are highly adaptable, and Isabelle Sky will learn to live with her deformity. One of my diamond doves also has a deformed foot. Her toes are twisted, and some shorter than they should be, and she has a hard time gripping the perch with that foot and sometimes slips. But she gets around fine, and it's not in any way compromising her quality of life. I think your little one will be ok as well, if it is just a deformity. However if she is leaning on one foot, I do wonder if she is in pain. Is there any possible chance it could be a broken foot?

I'd love to see good photos of the foot to compare to two other parrotlets I know with deformed feet. I have a hunch that it's caused by a nutritional deficiency. As she is so young, it may not be very hard to improve her foot.
