HI
EVERYONE

New to the forum. I will be getting a new little baby soon. My breeder is pulling the babys in two week. I can hardly wait. Do you know how long it will be until my new born is going to be able to come home?

Thanks Lynn [/img]

Hi Lynn, welcome to Fluffies Smile

Parrotlets start weaning at 4-5 weaks and usually by 7 weeks of age, they're completely independednt, so I would imgine your baby should be ready to come home at around 7 weeks of age.

Hi Shirin

Thanks for the welcome. This is a great forum, I am learning a lot on information from different sites but it is nice to talk to someone that has had all the little things happen . I'm so excited to get my little sweetie her gage and toys are all ready for her/him.
I have read that you should not feed your fluffie cockatiel food is the so?
I was going to feed a mix of cockatiel and pellets. What do you thinkl?

Oh I can imagine you must be excited Very Happy Those little parrotlets are such little cuties, no wonder your baby has already stolen your heart Heart Is this your first bird?

Which kind of cockatiel feed were you thinking of? I wouldn't give her a seed mix and pellets together, because she will just pick out the seeds, and leave the pellets. I personally don't feed my birds any seed, unless as a treat. A pelleted diet in addition to fruits, and vegetables is a sufficient enough diet. Although I'm not going to tell you what you should feed your baby, because this is a controvercial topic, and some prefer to have their birds on seeds, and others on pellets. You should do some reading on both sides, and then make an informed decision on what you think is best for your baby. Personally I went the pellet route and that's what my veterinarian has recommended to me. If you do want to offer both, I recommend getting her used to pellets and make sure she is eating them when that's her only option, and then perhaps offer her only pellets for half of the day, and then the seed at the end of the day. The one thing I can tell you is that an all seed diet, that's not supplemented with and fruits and vegetables and proteins will not be sufficient and can lead to malnutrition. You also have to make sure you are getting a high quality brand of pellets that's free of artificial colours, and flavours, with no sugars added and ideally no preservatives.

Do you know what kind of food your breeder will be weaning your baby on? If you can, decide on a good brand of pellets now, and maybe you can give your breeder the food that you want her to get weaned on, that way she'll already be used to that food, and you won't have to go through the hassle of converting her to the kind of food you want her to eat.

As far as pellets, the best brand on the market is Harrison's bird food http://www.harrisonsbirdfoods.com/ Unfortunately it's only sold at vet's offices. And I don't know what province you're in, but the closest place to me that I found that sells it is in Oakville. You can also order it on line. Otherwise the next best pellets that you can buy at a local petstore would be Hagen's Tropican, or Zupreem. Just don't get the ones that are coloured. Very Happy

Ok, sorry for such a long post Embarassed

Thank You both for your replies. I have been reading a lot about my new baby to be. I quess that I should take my breeders advise on the food requirments. I am tending to lean towards the pellets as I feel that they would have all the vitamin and minerals needed.

This forum is so much fun to explore. You both have such beautiful Home pages. Your birds are so stunning. you must have being raising your birds for a along time. I have had a cockatiel before a long time ago, but now I have two dogs , a peekapoo and a yorkie. When I get my new baby, I will have to post some pictures of all my little friends.

I have not picked out a name yet because I'm not sure if I will get a male or female cutie. My baby was just being born.

Thanks Again for the warm welcome!

Lynn

Hi Lynn,

Welcome to the forum. Congrats on your new baby. Smile hope he/she'll come home soonl. Smile

will you be getting updates on the little ones from your breeders with pics and all that? it'll be cool if you could. Smile

I think Shirin has given some very good advice on seed and pellets. so go with what your guts instinct tells you is best for your little ones as long as it's supplemented with other fresh foods. Smile

good luck. Would love to see some pics of your fids. Smile oh by the way, what a peekapoo??

Cheers
Bih

Hi Cheeta

Thanks for the message. I never thought of asking her for pictures , what a good idea.

A peekapoo is a cross between a poodle and a pekinese dog.

I will post pics. as soon ads I figure out how to do this.

You guys asr all so sweet ! Thanks

My New Baby  Reply with quote

Hi Everyone

Well I have taken your advise and been to see my breeder. I have picked out my baby and found out all about him. I have taken some pictures of him and he is adorable. I have named him Bean and the breeder tells me that she will be putting him in a little pouch and taking him with her as she goes about her day. He is only four weeks old in the picture that I will ad to my Home Page. I will ad pictures as he grows, I go to visit him as often as I can. I still have a few weeks before I can bring my sweet pal home. Love to read al your posts, they are so informative.

wow, I don't know if I could wait that long if I were you... Laughing Laughing

Yes I have LOTS of pics in my homepage and diarypages. Are you using internet explorer at the moment to view the pages? If you are, you'll have to wait a long time for it to pop up. Basically, for one reason or another, dont know why, if you're using internet explorer, it'll load up the whole entire page first before anything appears... because my homepage, and most of my diarypages have a lot, and i mean a LOT of pics, it might take awhile, depending on your internet connections as well.

Hello Plato & Myas Mom

Thank you. I can't wait to go through all the trials of a new baby. I'm sure that I will get a lot of good advice from all my new friends here. I love your pictures of your birds. Have you been able to teach them to talk. And if so how much?
