My theory on Pionus....  Reply with quote

I have been reading about the origin of the Pionus species....just out of curiosity....and there isn't much information about them! I was really suprised! A lot of text I've found links Pionus to the Conure group...but I slightly dissagree.....
There is apparently evidence that Conures are directly related to Macaws...so I've been keeping an eye on Aiden and seeing what I notice...well, I've come to the conclusion that Pionus could be related to the Amazon species....if you look at them physically compared to Conures, there is nothing really all that similar. other than the beak....
The body of the Pionus is a lot heartier and has a heavier body....
also the tail is the square shape, and not "cone shaped" which is what Conure actually means.
Also the vocalizations that Aiden makes are very similar to the vocalizations of Pepe, as far as the grunts and whistles....
I'm probably way off base...but I have fun pretending to be smart! lol...

Hi Lynzi... I love researching too Wink I've always heard the Pionus are more closely related to Amazons. They look like it too, but a little mellower in temperament. I've heard the Conures are related to Macaws, and they also look like it... vocal like Macaws too!
Have you noticed with Aiden, that he gives off a "puff" of odor when excited? Some people say it is sweet smelling in Pionus, but Adrion smelled musky (or actually musty)! I've noticed Amazons do the same thing with the 'puff'.

Pionus are so underrated, I wonder why they haven't become more popular by now? So mellow, good size, fairly quiet, very reasonably priced, etc! Maybe they are too sedate for a lot of people, but that makes them so easy to keep!

for sure!! Researching is a good way to expand your brain cells...heeheehee
It's funny, but I have never heard that....darn...I thought I was a genius! haah.
I have noticed that lil Puff of good smells from both Pepe and Aiden....I love it! haha.

I'm with you on the underrated thing....They seem so perfect if you ask me!
I mean...how many Pionus are pluckers or biters...or screamers for that matter.....?
And it can't even be because they're not as colorful or pretty as Conures....
I mean Blue Headeds are DROP DEAD gorgeous!
hmmmm....

Hi Lynzi,

You know that I had not really thought about what other parrot Pi is like... Question

But I agree with you that they are a smaller happier version of an Amazon.. Wink

And YES Pi does release a musky, fresh air smell when she is excited or being cuddled lots... Great Smell - I am forever sticking my nose in her feathers....
