Panting  Reply with quote

Just so you know in case that it happens to you...

Pionus Pant some times (sounds like they are hyperventilating)

This is normal for them - who knows what it means - scared/excited so I have heard....

Pi has only ever done this once - when we brought him home (so I would say he was scared then!!)

But this evening I was preening him - helping him through his moult and he was doing it and releasing his great smell - so I am hoping that he was happy - he was not sqwarking or anything or trying to get away - he was just sitting on my arm and letting me take the hard stuff off his new feathers!!

LOL he is having a tough time with this moult as he is trying to get rid of his big feathers - got quite a few....

I am trying to thing if any one of my birds have not Panted at one time or another. It seemd to me the the smaller birds do not (or have not that I know of), But the Conuers on up I believe have at one time or another, Scared, excieted, hormonal. I consider it a normal behiveor when it happens.

Hi Sue,

Stress Response
Pionus have three different responses to stress. The most severe is when they thrash. This response is initiated if something very scary enters their room or if their cage is hit when they are asleep. The bird will thrash around in his/her cage until calmed down. The next stress response it to sit very still. At bird shows, when many of the other birds are screaming, a Pionus will often sit perfectly motionless. The last stress response is unique to Pionus. Pionus, when scared, will wheeze as if they are having an asthma attack. The wheezing will stop as soon as the scary person or object backs off.

This is from http://www.google.com/faq/pionus.htm

But I think that the Wheezing is if they are scared or excited...

I've seen Manu pant when he is outdoors in very hot weather. When he starts panting I know it's time to bring him in. And I was worried the first time I saw him do that.
The only other time I've seen him pant is when I finally got him after he flew off that one time & he spent an entire afternoon being chased lower & lower in the trees by tree trimmers before I finally got him! He was definitely worked up that time Shocked THAT did scare me!

I've never seen Jennie the sennie, or Poppy the 'tiel pant.

Fi

poor Aiden has thrashed around a couple of times if I bump into his cage...
I felt awful!!!
because he just fell down to the bottom of the cage...so I grabbed him out and snuggled with him to make him feel all better Laughing
then he started a little bit of the wheezing noises.....and cuddled up to me...
so I don't know if he was wheezing because he was still a bit scared....or if he was happy I "rescued" him.... Confused Very Happy
