| Phoenix the Bronze Winged Pionus! |
|
|
Hello!
Please excuse the silly screen-name on this message board. I honestly just picked a name out of thin air because I wanted to ask some questions and read some posts. I never thought I'd contribute some of my own things! But here I go!
I have two birds, a Senegal and a Bronze Winged Pionus named Phoenix. Phoenix is the prettiest thing ever, I love her dearly. She is almost 3 years old now, and safe to say I have not had a fight with the terrible two's yet! She is a fantastic addition to my family - Quiet most of the time and always very sweet. She doesn't care to cuddle much but she'll drool if you give her sweet head and beak scratches. She LOVES her eyelids being rubbed. I've had to take her to the vet multiple times because I get so worried about the 'drool' that comes out of her beak when she's really excited. It's clear and white. After many tests though, she has always been absolutely fine... she just LOVES head rubs!
She hates her back being touched and will bark out the goofiest sound if I try to touch her wings. Sometimes we play fight- she's always very gentle with her beak. But in the middle of her 'attack', she'll fluff up her head and put it down for more scratches. What a wimp!
I let her play on top of her cage with a bunch of toys, but her favorite one is her bird kong. She will run full force into it and grab on, swinging like crazy. She makes the funniest sound when she does that and fluffs her feathers on end. Sometimes, she confuses me. She'll 'saunter' on top of her cage, making her Pionus wheeze sound... but her feathers will be fluffed up and she'll drag her wings behind her like an ogre would drag it's knuckles! I HAVE to get a picture of this, it's absolutely the funniest thing ever.
After a couple of really bad molts, her feathers are absolutely wonderous. Her black feathers glimmer with purples, blues and greens. I absolutely love this bird and I am happy to share her with you!
I'll post some nice pictures when I find the digital camera cable. oops!

Hi Carly,
thanks for sharing a bit about your pionus. Actually I love pionuses and have always said that my next bird will be a pionus. They are so beautiful. I just recently saw a bronze winged in person and I was just blown away by the amazing colours on their feathers and decided that that's the kind that I want. Can you tell me a bit more about the pros and cons of having a bronze winged pionus? Are they one person type birds? Does Phoenix get along with Sasha? Aside from not liking their backs touched, do they like being handled much? Thanks in advance for any other info you can give me |

Hey!
Alright, I'll try to list some pros and cons for you, with Phoenix anyways. Keep in mind that I worked at the pet store when she came in as a baby, and helped to handfeed her. This probably contributed a lot!
Pros- Relatively quiet. Capable of a SCREAM once in a while though! She's independent enough that I don't have to spend all day with her. She just as content to stand and watch what I'm doing. She's an excellent shoulder bird, never bites when she's up there and comes off when I want her to. She smells SO NICE! I love her Pionus 'perfume' she seems to emit even stronger when she's happy. She showers with me, and tips upside down on her shower perch and gets absolutely drenched. She's pretty good with different kinds of toys but is pretty destructive on them. She has only ever bitten me once, and I think I scared her - but right after she did, she came running up to me and demanded head scratches... possibly her way of saying sorry? She almost always steps up when I want her to, but I can't 'pick her up' by anything but her feet or else she'll HONK! hahaha. She's got such character, I love her. She's definatly NOT a one person bird, she loves my boyfriend probably as much as she loves me and she loves visiting other people.
Cons- Hmmm... well she doesn't get along with Sasha at all but that could be Sasha's fault. She says 'step up' only and repeats it lots.. which gets annoying hhaha. She gets a little fussy if I leave her in her cage and paces around like crazy which also drives me bonkers. Hmmm.. oh yes! And she loves to chew her rope perches where they connect to the plastic screw-in-thinga-ma-bobs until they frey and break. She tends to have funky molts and she loves to fly around when she has tons of blood feathers. I think she just gets sick of her cage and wants to explore.
That's it! not a lot of cons, and they aren't really *bad* things either.
As far as being handled lots, I spend probably just over an hour with her directly on me a day which isn't much compared to my very needy senegal, but she does like to be in the same place as I am... if I'm on the couch, she'll fly over. This is a big PRO for me, though, because I dont have to reassure her constantly and she just likes to 'hang out'.
I love my Pi
GL!

I just found this thread! I know it's old... Is Carly and Phoenix still around here?
I used to have a Bronze Winged Pi female named Adrion. She is over the rainbow bridge now
Bronze Winged Pionus are still my all time FAVORITE parrot species! She was the easiest thing to deal with... no real 'cons'. She was pretty shy and nervous at first though. She never craved handling like a Cockatoo, but she'd let me touch and kiss her all over her body. The handfeeder got her used to tolerating that.
I absolutely LOVE the name Phoenix, and am seriously considering it for my new Slender Billed Corella, but it is white! I don't know if 'Phoenix' would be appropriate for a white bird, since in the legend of the Phoenix, it is supposedly a colorful (or at least colored) bird.
