a little confused  Reply with quote

Hello everyone, my name is Amanda I am new to the forum and new parrot owner i have a senegal he is almost 5months old now. I wanted to know how long it takes for them to attach themselves to someone. He does all my whistles and loves to mumble Very Happy he doesn't go on his back and doesn't seem to really enjoy being petted. He does love to be near us though. does anyone know how to keep them on their perch he always jumps off and goes after my poor dog?

Hi Amanda, welcome Smile The answer is "time". Smile It all just takes time. They have more wild instincts than dogs for example, so you can't expect them to be loving on you and doing tricks from the get go. How long just depends... each person and bird is different. How long have you had him? If you don't want him on the floor (which is a good idea to not have him on the floor at his size), pick him up immediately and tell him no. You can use a cue word such as "get up" which he might eventually learn to climb up onto his cage by himself. When he does good and you can tell he is learning what you want him to do, reward him with praise and a treat. Good luck, and have some patience Very Happy Also, some people swear by clicker training, for posititve reinforcement training. I don't do it, but I've heard good things about it if you don't mind always having a clicker handy. Sue does it, she will probably be happy to tell you about it.

i have had him about 3months now. He is so funny i never thought something so small could be so smart and funny. I bought him from a pet store and the people there loved him he sat on their shoulders from the day he came in to the day he was sold. Johnny loves to be around people. i will try the perch thing i just built a beautiful perch out of pvc pipe and rope it looks amazing and he loves it. Thanks for your help.

They are really smart and funny Smile Seeing it is something I think only bird people realize. Non-bird people will never recognize what pet potential birds have Laughing Sounds like you will have many fun years with Johnny, and it is only beginning! Smile

training 5 month old Sennie's  Reply with quote

Hi Amandany

Our Sennie's are the same age. I have two boys Obi and Kip. So far my fids are not doing any whistles. I speak in context all the time to them. They are both very cuddly and go to everyone, even my 7 and 10 year old children. They especially love my son's efforts on the electric guitar.Keep intouch if you teach them anything new, I would be so happy to hear a wolf whistle.
