Bella ths Shower Jumper.  Reply with quote

Embarassed The other day I payed $26.00 for a perch that is for the shower. Bella hated it. But I decided to try her on it in the Shower. I put her on it and she stood there. When I started spraying the wall, never straight on her, She bolted. Shocked Good thing her wings will let her glide down. She landed in the tub. Shocked I was scarred to death. I was afraid she may have hurt herself. But STUPID me I tried it again. Embarassed She reacted the same. So I got out and dried her off very gently. I stayed up all night to make sure she was ok. I did not call the Vet, She did not jump or squirm when I touched her stomach or leggs or anywhere. But I still watched her for a few days but not all night. She is fine, but I took the perch backthe next day. Idea I am making her a new perch smaller and she has been watching me build it. She loves to walk in it. I will keep it close to the ground in case she decides to take a jump again. It's turning out pretty good. My husband says that I can put Rustolium on the perch and it comes in colors. that will make it easier to grip. Not sure about that. Anyway I am spraying her from underneath with a squirt bottle and her "Sooth" and
"Rain" that I bought from her Vet. Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Debi, don't think you're stupid!
What did you do? Did you comfort her? How hard it may seem please try not to & show her how much fun it would be to sit there & shower!

Was the perch too slippery for her? (Just curious?)

Please keep us updated about her next shower adventure.. Hope it'll be better!

I had the same question, was the perch slippery? Also, is it the perch or the water that bothers her? Can you put her on the perch in the shower but not have the water on -- maybe that could be a way to get her used to the perch? I can do that and I keep the curtain open so Piper can watch me from her perch get ready for work. She usually preens while I'm getting ready (it's so cute). Although she doesn't mind the shower. I guess my point is, was it the perch or the water that made her fly off of it?

I don't know about using rustoleum. I read zinc is a material used to prevent rusting. Make sure no lead or zinc are in the ingredients. What are you making the perch out of? Can you use a more natural material that can allow her to grip better?

Piper often flies off her gym to the ground. Bella doesn't fly off anything? Piper does it when she is begging fo rme to hold her. She is always ok and lands safely. Actually, that might be good practice so she knows she can do it if she had too. As long as her wings are clipped enough to let her fly at a downward angle, she is fine when she lands. They can't be clipped too much because she needs to fly enough to not hurt herself. I guess the shower is more enclosed, though, so she could bump into something.

Maybe Bella will not ever be a shower lover. I find Piper isn't a very dusty bird so misting could be fine, instead of soaking to the skin. Even when Piper is in the shower, she stands with her feathers tightly on her so her down doesn't get wet, just the top of her feathers. That seems to do the trick.

I am making the perch out of a dawl. I am connecting it with suction cups. I thought I would put her on it when I am taking a bath but not get her wet and not put her in the water. I need to soak my leg because it stiffens up. I take her cage in with me so that she can be in there or play on top. Someday she may decide to join me. I have started misting her. It seems to work. She now will sit there and not try to fly away. Bella is very curious and she fly off from anywhere. She flies down at an angle. I dont let her out without me or my husband being there to watch her. she loves to pull things out of my purse. Laughing
Cute Bella Story: She was climbing up the couch and back to my lap. I was sitting in a recliner with my legt up. Every time she got to me She would say Pretty. It was late so I asked her "Does Bella wanted to go to bed. See walked right over to her cage, I opened it and she went right to her perch. I thought that was so smart and cute.
The original perch that I bought had a coating that was gray and rubery. and not slick. She hated it when I tried to have her go to it on her step up exercises. We have a spirial willow in the yard that is dead. I have been scrubbing the limbs and soaking them all night and cleaning them really well she does well with this and the wood is soft enough that she chews it to pieces. I then take it out and wash another. Sometimes they are washed a few times. and scrubbed with a rag. They have ups and downs.
So it is not boring to walk on.
Deb and the Jumper Bella.

That is really cute. Bella is really smart. It sounds like she understands a lot of what you say. Did she start talking on her own or did you train her?

Bella was only 3 months old when we bought her. I was out of work with my knee. So I spent all day talking to her and playing with her. She did not even know how to step up. She has chosen words she likes to say. But you should hear the sounds. My husband makes all sorts of weard sounds to her and she will repeat them back, kind of like they have their own language. I try to duplicate the sounds but Bella is smarter than I am. Laughing She will also whistle at my son that likes to whistle. So she mostly comunicates with each of us differently.

I do have another question. I shapped her nails so that they would not kill me. She hated it so bad. I had her wrapped in a towel and my son held her. I was ever so careful and held each nail secure while I filed just to take the point off. It was like a needle. I am thinking a vet is going to do it next time. But they become like this so often. How often should I make an appointment for her nails and beak Question I am wondering if she does this while she is in the cage while we are at work. And I hate the sand paper type of pearch. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I got Piper at 3 months old also. She is about 5 1/2 months now. She definitely has lots of unusual sounds and whistles, but no words or anything that sounds like words. I know senegals aren't necessarily known for their talking and she may not talk. Or she may. I guess we'll see.

I know what you mean about their nails. Pipers are getting really sharp too. I keep trying to file them but not by putting her in a towel but when she is on her gym. She isn't too thrilled with that. I could probably do it if I worked on it more. But it might be best to have the vet do it so she doesn't associate that experience with you (I read this). I asked my vet the same question about how often wings and nails should be trimmed. She said possibly twice a year. I guess it depends on the bird. It depends how fast things grow. But maybe with the vet trimming the nails, since they know what they are doing, they might trim them so it takes longer to get sharp again then when you or I do it so getting the nails trimmed wouldn't be like a constant thing. I was also told the beak grooming isn't done even that often but I wonder cuz I swear Piper's beak is getting sharper. Must be all that beak grinding.

I do have a sandy perch -- not sand paper on a perch. I put it low so it isn't the main perch she stands on so it won't hurt her feet. But it isn't really working as far as taking the sharp edge off the nails. I may need to re-position it in her cage though. It would be nice if that would work just to take the sharp edge off.

Debi..
I know about the nails, they can become little razors.. Sad
I file them myself..

You can practice wrapping her in a towel when her nails don't have to be filed.. Giving her treats, showing her things etc..
In this way, she might get used to towelling.. Smile
Then you can procede to grabbing her foot.. Smile

nails  Reply with quote

We play peek a boo in a towel all of the time and so she is used to being wrapped like a baby. And when I do get her wet I wrap her in a towl to help dry her. She shakes when she is wet. I read that it is ok but I worry about her catching cold. I dont think I worried about my children that much. Laughing I made it sound like I was like pinning her down with a towel and filing her nails. We just held her like we were playing peek a boo. But she still hated it. Your suggestions were great. maybe when she is playing I can try again, but I think I am going to stick to the vet. My vet would not file her nails last time he said she needs them while she is so young so that she will not fall. I had to agree, I dont want her falling, I would rather put up with the pins in my skin, they do heal Laughing The tops of my hands feel like sandpaper because of little pricks in the them. Thats ok too.

That's also true.. I didn't think about that. I thought they had enough 'grip' with their feet already! But it's a good thing to point it out!

Success at last.  Reply with quote

I put the perch that I made in the tub, just a little higher than the tub. I got in the tub and put her on her perch. I ran water on the wall as usual and she actually walked into it. I took my hand and poured it over her gently, she did not mind that. Surprised It was successful for the first time. Wink then I put her on her towel and dried myself and put a towel around me and took her to my room to stand on the bedpost while I got dressed then I dried her off a little. It is nice that it is warm. I did not completely dry her. The book I am reading says that one of the things they do is fly in the rain and it will help use energy to let them flap their wings and tail to dry. It worked. Wink Surprised I was really excited.
Anyway I think we are on the right track.

Great to hear about your success! Way to go! Smile

I was surprised to hear about what you read in that book.. It does make sense, though I never thought about it that way!
