Can you buy a new showerhead? They can be relatively inexpensive and maybe the old one can screw off and the one can be screwed right on. Although, if you live in a really old building and the plumbing is old (like lead pipes), it may not be the best idea to use the water. They do end up drinking a little of it when they shower. How about warm water in a spray bottle, and then spraying the water up in the air over the parrot's head and letting it gently fall on him/her? Sometime parrots are afraid of spray bottles so that can be a consideration. I've never tried this method but I know many people do this. The other option might be letting her take a bath in a little dish. Maybe get a special birdy bath tub for her. Just some thoughts . . . |

I think it really depends on what each bird likes.. My lorikeet loves to have a bath in a sink -- I usually use my laundry sink because there's enough room for him to walk around and flap his wings and do funny little "swimming" moves . However, a spray bottle also works well when I don't really have time to blow-dry the bird. |

Nope, the nob sticking out of the wall has a very weird attachment and it wouldn't be easy finding a nicer shower head that fit it. And, I'm almost positive I don't have lead pipes. Kiwi likes to be misted with the spray bottle though, so maybe I'll just stick to that for now |

I think you're right -- it does depend on what each bird likes. I tried giving Piper a bath in the sink and she didn't like that. She loves the shower though.
So, if Kiwi likes being misted, that is the way to go for now!
Question: Does blow drying dry out a bird's feathers? |

Bella still hates baths. She hates to have the squirt bottle around her, and I have never used it except to spray the air. And it takes a long time to dry her even with the extra absorbant towels. I have put her on my shoulder and not sprayed her but let the water hit the wall and bounce on her. This seems to work. the other day I was in the tub with her watching and I put her on my shoulder and poured water from a dish on my shoulders and it got her and she did not mind that. I decided she would probably grow into batha if I dont make her when she is frightened.

That is basically what I do with Piper. In the shower she is on my hand and the water bounces off of me onto her. She just closes her eyes and enjoys it. She doesn't seem to want to be directly under the water spraying from the showerhead though. So if Bella is fine with being on your shoulder and getting wet, that should be good enough, I would think.
Piper doesn't take too long to dry. After the shower I dry her off as much as I can. I put her on her table top gym on the bathroom countertop. I blow dry my hair, do my make-up and that takes about 20 minutes. She is dry by that time, pretty much. Only her top feathers are getting wet which may be why she doesn't take long to dry. How long does Bella take to dry? |

Good news!!!!!! I made Bella a little perch for the tub. Yesterday I put her on it and sat in the tub with no water. I ran shower water over me washed my hair and showered the wall. Bella moved around the perch and was getting drops of water on her, not complaining at all. Then after I was finished I held her in my hands and put her in the water, up to her neck. She did not squirm at all. She actually liked it. I was so excited. Then I got out and dried and put Bella in some new microabsorbant washcloths that I bought at Target ( Thank you Melissa) She was damp when I opened the door and shaking a little. But it was her first successful dip in the water without panicing. I now feel safe taking her with me. If at first you dont succeed try try again.

Hi Debi:
Congratulations! I'm so glad you finally got her in the water without her being afraid. She's going to learn to love it! If Piper goes a day or two without me taking her in the shower, she starts bathing in her water dish. It is so cute! I purposely went about 3 days w/o taking her in the shower and then yesterday morning she started bathing in her water. So I gave her a bigger bowl with shallow water in it and she went nuts! She has more fun in the bowl then the shower where she just sits there with her eyes closed letting the water hit her (I think she enjoys the warmth more than the water). Anyway, I guess my point is Bella is going to wonder what she ever did without a shower! I don't know if Bella should be immersed to her neck --- I've seen birds get themselves soaked just fine in an inch or so of water.
I'm glad the towels worked. I also bought a thermoperch that someone on this forum suggested. It keeps her little feet warm and would probably be good to put her on if she was wet. It's just that she is dry by the time I'm done in the bathroom (and she is in there with me on her gym). I don't usually get her totally soaked, she doesn't seem to need that. But I'm glad Bella is finally learning how great baths are!
