| Hello after 6 years |
|
|
This is finally it, I'm sure that Tim has finally said hello It's not very clear yet but I'm certain that he's trying to imitate speech. He said it when I picked him up to put him back in his cage tonight and he was being affectionate, he stepped onto my hand and when I went to kiss him goodnight there it was. Maybe he didn't say it before cos I wouldn't let him get a word in edgeways |

Well I can understand Tims point of View I live with a lot of females myself and thats not even counting Carrie.... You may regreat haveing him talk. We have a very lively bird room at times, we have 8 birds that talk and 2 more on the way. But Congreats anyway, it is always a lot of fun when they are talking...

I think it's a big breakthrough for Tim. When I'm on my own with him he's sociable and happy to come out of his cage, but when I have visitors he does revert back and he won't come out of his cage, preferring to sit and watch quietly. He isn't as fearful as he used to be when he froze and was too frightened to eat, I think the next step is to get people to give him titbits, his favourites are little pieces of fresh banana. Mischief talks all the time, the minute she sees me in the mornings she's full on saying up up up, cuddle cuddle, peep bo, with two of us how did Tim stand a chance |

Ahhh that is soooo wonderful! Don't worry, his 'hello's will get better in time I am sure about that! Usually they practice when you're not around. At least iago does! |

That's great news Julie! A great accomplishment on your part to have won him over and made him happy enough that now he wants to talk!

Tim seems to have gone back to blowing raspberries again and hasn't tried to talk for about a day, I hope he hasn't given up, I love him whether he talks or not he is very loving, I think since the other day I've tried a little too hard to get him to do it again which has perhaps changed my behaviour a little and I'll have to go back to being how I was again. With Tim you have to be very sensitive to his moods. |

Just try to relax about it Julie. You're right. You just need to be your normal self. He was responding well to you that way and I'm sure he'll continue his progress in all areas but probably needs to do it at his own pace. He certainly has come to trust you and respond to you so I'm sure he'll start with the words again when he's ready.

Thanks Chispleeze, I've taken a step backwards and relaxed more, I just got a bit over excited and tried too hard. |

It's easy to do. But have to share that last year I started trying to get Smokey, my grey, to say "Ho, ho, ho...Merry Christmas!" She got the ho, ho, ho part right away and eventually added the meeeerrrry. But would not say Christmas. I started again last week saying it around here though and now she's got the whole thing!! So when they're ready....

Hi Robin, it does seem that they have to think things through for a while, I can always tell when Tim is thinking things over and he always has subtle changes in his behaviour before making a major decision to try something, I think I've developed a sixth sense with him if that makes any sense to you. He has tried to say hello again though not as clearly as the other day and unlike Mischief he doesn't go through his repertoire when he's dozing off to sleep, I can hear her now mumbling away to herself as she's settling for her afternoon nap. I know that parrots aren't supposed to have facial expression but I think that''s not entirely true, I don't know what you think about it. If Tim did learn a word or two I think it would show that he considers himself to be one of the flock, other than that so long as he's happy that's all that worries me. |

Oh I agree Julie. I can tell by looking at my guys if they're in a good mood and want to be scritched or handled, if they're in a mischieveous mood and want to play, if they're mad or overexcited, etc. Those eyes, the tilt of their heads...They definitely have expressions that I understand.
