| Iago takes his job very serious.. |
|
|
Iago had completely de-leafed the tree I put him in.. That's all fine with me, but I couldn't find him just a minute ago..
When I looked closer, I saw him sitting in the willow tree that still has some green leaves.. (Well, not for long!)
He had walked all the way to that willow tree to start 'de-leafing' it!
At the moment, he is happily chewing on the leaves, or should I say: Ripping them off?

How funny! I guess they like to do that. We put Piper in a Dogwood and she does that. I've read Dogwood is a safe wood. Do you know if the leaves are ok? I don't think she is ingesting them, but I want to be safe.
By the way, what is the weather like in the Netherlands this time of year? |

I don't know about dogwood.. Do you have the scientific name for dogwood?
The weather is very unpredictable.
Sometimes rain, sometimes sunshine.
The temperature is about 16 degrees celcius.. |

I am curious, do you take Iago outside and let him walk from tree to tree or do you just put him in a willow. Or do you take the branck of a willow in the house.
If you put him in a tree, is there other birds around? We have so many nests in the trees around our house that I would be scared to take her out to play. Am I being to protective? We did not take Kloie outside only to go to the vet. I take Bella for rides in the car. So I am getting more relaxed. I just dont want anything to happen.
Also do you take Iago on trips in the car or plane and for how long are you gone? And do you have other animals or just bird. We have 4 dogs in the yard as well. I
I was also wondering what it means when Bella makes this strange movement with her neck. She seems to to it when she is excited. Like a excited dance. I am sorry I ask so many questions, I just want to do it right.

I just put him in a tree, then he starts walking to other trees..
I think you aren't protective.. Over here, there aren't many big birds.. Also, my sheperd dog Nenya keeps guard..
(Which is the only pet besides my fids)
I do take Iago on trips in the car, but never by plane.. Poor Iago, never flown with a plane..
I didn't understand the funny movement with Bella's neck? Could it be she tries to returgirate for you?
Please don't try to encourage this behavior as it might lead to frustration.. (I am not sure if this is what you're talking about!)
Don't worry about asking questions.. |

Hi Debi:
We take Piper outside. She has her wings trimmed so she won't fly away. But we don't do much outside. Even with her wings trimmed if a gust of wind came, she could fly a bit and who knows what would happen. So we usually just sit with her on our arm on the front porch. We used to put her in this little dogwood tree but stayed very close to her because we have red-tailed hawks that are around and our vet told us of one of her customers losing her small parrot due to a hawk (we won't go out at all if we see a hawk). Anyway, the tree wasn't too big but taller than us. She began exploring the tree and climbing higher. Then she got to where she was a lot higher than us and began dominance behavior -- she'd bite if we tried to get her down and once we did she nipped and kept flying off our arm. So no more tree for Piper. We have tons of wild birds around so we just keep her close to us. She loves it outside though. She loves listening to the other birds.
I do have other animals -- 2 dogs. I usually don't let the dogs around when Piper is outside. One of my dogs is complete fine with Piper and shows no interest in her or not but since there are things that can happen (other birds, wind gusts, etc.) I'd prefer to not have an added complication. Maybe we are a little over-protective but since we're kinda new with Senegals, I think it is better to be on the safe side!

| taking birds outside to rip up leaves |
|

i take my Sake outside - he is definitely w/o the ability to fly, although the few times he jumps nowadays he seems to glide a lot better (and doesn't lose feathers, he is growing a tail woohooo!!!). anyway, i keep him on my arm, or put him on the table we have out there. or i'll go sit in the grass and put him down on the ground. usually i grab a bunch of leaves and sake loves to rip them to pieces with me holding the other end (he must have talkeed to Iago at some point). i don't have any good bird trees in the back yard - just really tall straight ones. the dogs come outside with us but as i've mentioned elsewhere they don't bother Sake a bit. earlier today we were out there and sake was wandering around in the grass in the sun on one side of me and Plato was sprawled out sunning himself on the other side of me. it is fun, and relaxing for all of us. i think it is great (here is an opinion again) for Sake to get natural light and fresh air, and it is a nice way to spend time with all my animals. i'm not allowed by the doctor to teach at all this summer - it hurts financially but does mean my animals get a lot of time with me. i try to make sure to leave each of them on their own a while to amuse themselves though - i don't want to get them thinking i will always be around... anyway, taking Sake outside is always fun, and he really likes it.
