well there are a lot of things in pet shops that aren't bird safe... a lot of the bird toys manufactured by big manufacturing company contains zinc coated wire, so I don't buy stuff like that from bird shop anymore. |

Harnesses are great tool to use to take your bird outdoor provided that your bird doesn't know how to unclip themselves. Apollo has figured out how to unclip himself down to the T, so no more harnesses for him. it's a cat carrier cage that he's in when he goes outdoor with me.
Talking of harnesses, I have mentioned this before somewhere, I can't recommend the 'Aviator' harness enough. It has no clasps to undo and is supposed to be completely escape proof as long as you follow the instructions it is fool proof. Easy to get on and a very simple but clever design. Far better than anything else I have seen. It comes with a DVD to show you how to use it too. |

Good luck Beefy you're doing the right thing finding out everything you can and asking advice, you have a young bird so with patience you should be able to teach her to wear the harness. Regarding the peanuts buying parrot food and toys is a minefield, the best thing is to feed foods that are fit for human consumption, I give my birds Tidy Mix and all the ingredients in it are fit for human consumption, my birds have kept fit and well on it for at least 6 years now and I've been known to eat a brazil nut or two from it as I'm feeding my birds, a word of warning though, my Sennie Tims kisses can be pretty explosive when he's been eating the dried chillies in it |

Yes I've heard many many many good reports about the aviator harness... Have yet to think about buying one for Apollo. it's just much easier for me to dump him in a carrier cage where I can just leave him somewhere near me while i'm out and about the the backyard. I know it's very different to having the freedom of harness, but hey, I don't think Apollo cares much for the outdoor to be honest.. he seems to be always be preoccupied with chewing my fingers!! |

I have brought a harness of ebay now just waiting for it to arrive i could go out tommorrow with hunny and collect chestnuts in the forrest if it turns up by then . She isnt talking yet but the last few weeks is getting more verble which is good. She is more noisey when i have her in the same room as me but where she cannot see me so i have been doing that and repeting hello. she replies with a squark theat resemble the sound of hello now bet dosent actually say it. I have downloaded a sound from a cd made for parrots that your supposed to leave playing for them to learn and every now and then i leave it on for a while and she seems to like the sound of the voice on it. |

One word of advise conerning taking him outside. Don't let him eat or chew on anything you are not sure of.
People spray Insecidces (sp) and all kinds of things on their outside plants and trees without even thinking about anything eating them or chewing on them..
Wild bird popo is a very very dangoures to your bird, do not let her near any at all...
in other words the outside world is not a heathly place for a bird....
