| Problem, New Owner of Senegal HELP! |
|
|
Please help. I adopted a previously owned Senegal who is 10.
He (or she) lived with his owner for the whole ten years. We have had him about 1 week now. I have read that stressed sengals only pick their back feathers, but my baby is bald on the front.
He started out being a little bare, but everyday when I come home, there seem to be more missing. I leave the TV on during the day, and partially cover his cage, and am spraying him with feather in twice a day, and putting feather in on his food.
Can someone please tell me what else I can do for him? |

Hi dkpcrp! Welcome to Fluffies!
I'm sorry to hear your new sennie is plucking Had he begun plucking before he came to live with you? If not, it's obviously started due to stress from the move. I'm sure that would be stressful after 10 yrs with the same family & then a new one.
How is he settling in otherwise? Are you able to interact with him, is he friendly? Does he spend time out of his cage & time with the new family?
Since he's new to you, I would highly recommend taking him in for an avian vet visit, if you haven't already done so. |

I agree with Cathy take him to see an avian vet. If it is not a medical problem then i would suggest spending more time with him playing and having more cuddle time. New toys/house hold objects (toilet roll holders, tissue boxes, pieces of rope) will help keep him occupied Good luck

He loves all of us. He talks to us constantly, and is such a sweetie.
He did not pluck before. His owner gave him up cause the owner had cancer and couldnt take care of him.
I love on him constantly, and when I am home take him out, feed him fresh fruit and talk to him.
He is on his way to the closest thing we have to an AVian vet right now.
I will update on his blood work.
He just came by my job with my hubbie to say hi.
I know that his owner was with him all day, so it may be separation anxiety.
Has anyone heard of something like rescue remedy? it is made out of flower extract. I read something online about it for plucking birds. |

I agree with has been said. I'd take him to the avian vet to rule out any medical issues.
It could also be a hormonal thing. My Sennie was also plucking.. |

dk, I hope you find a cure for your sennie so he won't pluck his pretty feathers. Maybe he does need more attention. It may take time for him to get used to hid new routine. Keep us informed of his progress. |

Rescue Remedy is 27% alcohol.
Do you think that's a good thing to use on a small parrot? |

No, it is made by the same people as rescue remedy. They are called Bach essences. I looked it up on the website. This parrot owner did a great deal of research and tried many of the back essences and said that they worked wonders for his parrot. I read the article at www.bachflower.com under articles then help for parrots by bill kisselbach.
Since I am a newbie owner, I am afraid to try without someone "real" having tried this. It had an email address for bill, but it came back to me, so I am just being cautious.
You can use a combination of the 38 essences for different feelings, my husband asked the vet, and she said it couldnt hurt....but that wasnt really what I wanted to hear. The fecal came back normal, and we will know about the blood work tomorrow.
Thanks for the replies I really appreciate. It just makes me so sad when I see him mutilating his little body, and I dont know how to fix.

Yes, it does sound like it's stress related from the big transition & missing his previous family, even tho he's now with a great new family. I'm real sorry to hear it I'm glad you've had him into the vet.
It could also be environmental, such as the difference in temperature, humidity level, even scents in new home that you're not even able to smell.
Please try not to let him see you noticing, or paying too much to the plucking, as that might make the situation worse.
I don't know what else to say, other than keep researching about plucking.
I do wish you & him both the very best of luck !! |

I know this is a late reply for this post...but..if I were you I would RUN to the nearest pet smart or petco..and get several preening toys...my senegal loves them...and I would bet instead of plucking feathers...he would take his frustrations out on those kind of toys...! |
