| Scents in the house Need information please. |
|
|
I read that burning candles can kill a bird. Is this true? We are turtle setting for my daughter and the tank that Scooter lives in reaks. My husband let a candle to see if we could get rid of the oder and I made him blow it out right away.
Can anyone tell me if there are any candles or room fresheners that are safe. Someone said it was just certain candles and scents from them like Glade. I have not let anyone burn any at all. Also scents from cleaners. What do you do with your bird when you are cleaning the bathroom or kitchen sinks and floor, or scrubbing the carpet? Can anyone tell me where to find inforamtion on this. This is a real concern of mine. I need all of the help I can get.
Thank you very much

Hi Debi!
Here's a really good website that has a lot of info on hazzardous (sp?) things in the home. You have to scroll down a bit to find the stuff on scented candles and air fresheners.

That site was so disturbing! It is heartbreaking.
So far I've just put Piper in another room in the house with the door shut when I'm cleaning. But I've removed all cleaning products from upstairs where she stays. All I use is this grapefruit cleaner I got from Target (it was located where the 409 and Fantastic is) that says on it "No harsh chemicals." I do hairspray in a bathroom with closed doors and an open window and it is several rooms away from Piper. I got rid of my teflon pans although I had an expensive Calphalon set I kept. I'll use those only when I need extra pans and Piper will go in another room. I do not light candles or matches either.
If the turtle tank smells, it probably needs to be cleaned and that would get rid of the smell -- not that it is your responsibility to clean someone else's animal tank. If you can't stand the smell, just put it somewhere where you all don't have to smell it. Don't try to cover the smell with anything, it is too risky. One thing that might work (it worked for me when I had a power outtage and I had meat spoil in my freezer and smell it up) is charcoal (not the kind that has the lighter fluid in it). Charcoal is a substance that is supposed to absorb odors. I put a bunch of charcoal in a big bowl and put it in the freezer. It almost took away the smell completely. I have it in my ferrets' room (of course, it is totally out of reach of the animals). It seems to work.
My concern is carpet glue. We're probably going to be getting a few rooms recarpeted and I'm really worried about this. I know I can put Piper in another room, and stuff a towel under the crack of the door but is this sufficient? How long do those fumes linger? I'm worried it could take weeks. I read on that web site that was just recommended that you should shampoo them several times and then air out the room for awhile. But how long? Can even just a little of the smell that might linger be dangerous? Does anyone have experience with this? |

I know, it does sort of concentrate on the extremes that can happen. |

Thank you for the informaton. I walked in the livingroom just after my husband had lit a candle and asked him to put it out. He did not think it would hurt but I did. And the match that he used, I did not even think of that. I read the site and I am printing it for my family to read. Thank you for the website on hazards for birds. I did not think of most of them. I do know my friend lost about 8 birds when she moved into a house that had brand new carpet. She was devistated. She had raised one from an egg.
I will look for the cleaner at Target.
If a bird lives upstairs and insents are burned down stairs do you think that the smell will hurt after all of the distance it has had to travel to get upstairs? My son in law burns insents. Are there natural insents that will not hurt the birds? I am going to look for the sage.
It is quite a worry though.
Thanks for your prompt advice. I was really concerned about the scents.

I don't know about incense but I'm guessing it isn't to great for them either. Maybe you can just make sure your are in a room with a closed door so the scent doesn't reach them. Keeping that room well-ventilated might work. Can you open windows and use a fan? The more you can diffuse the smoke the better. |

I think why I worry so much is because my daughters bird Kloie was fine one day and laying on the bottom of the cage the next. I dont know why. I did not know anything about birds and did not study at all. I have learned so much after buying Bella. Things I would do different with Kloie. We took her out and played with her but not as much as Bella. I would do so many things different now. I had no idea about scents, we cleaned with Clorox all the time and other harsh cleaners. It did not ever bother her. She lived 8 year in spite of us not having any knowledge about birds. I think I am over protective because of not knowing what happened. I am really funny about dont use that and dont light that etc. I guess it is just only having the correct products in the house. then you dont have to worry. |

That is understandablel, to worry so much. I'm the same way. Like you said, it is worse when you don't know much and are just learning because you are afraid you're not doing something you should do or maybe even dong something wrong. And you're right about learning SO much as you go along. I've only had Piper 3 months but have read like 4 books and subscribe to Birdtalk magazine, as well as read web sites and this forum. Sounds like you're doing the same thing. I'm sure Bella is in very safe hands!
You know what they say about birds, they are masters at hiding illness and can look fine but be sick. I weigh Piper daily (that may be a bit obsessive but she is tiny and doesn't have much weight to lose), closely watch her behavior and always look at her poopies just to monitor her health. This way I feel reassured every day that she is fine. And for peace of mind, I have tried to remove anything that might be harmful (teflon pans, aerosols, etc).
I
know not to use them but my fiance's kids come over and they might inadvertently use something if it is there. You're right, you worry less when you know harmful things aren't around. |

I have taken great precautions to keep toxic items out of our home.....I do use more tof the organic cleaners but when I do use them the birds are usually out of the room. I have a son who had childhood asthma and I have always had to be very cautious with him since any chemical would make him get an attack, it got to the point that he had to be taken out of school and homeschooled....the emergency visits 2-3 times a month were not worth it! I would say not to panic but to be very cautious with cleaners, as for carpets, well again, we had to get rid of those as well.....bad for asthma and the birds! So we have made changes in our lives but worth it I think, figure if it would be bad for a bird or a child to breath then obviously its bad for our environment. |

Good points. I will never know how my daughters bird Kloie made it over 8 years with all of the mistakes we made. I probably would have done the same with Bella if I had not had this web site to come to for advice and information. My husband told his family that he just hopes I don't get on line before we leave for work. (Always cutting it close) |

We looked at Target and found a spray and a more concentrated grapefruit cleaner. Which one do you use:?:

She loves to just sit under it after the shower. They also have a large size that costs a bit more. Oh, and I found those towels in the automotive section of the store.
We looked for the towels as well but I missed the part about being in the automotive section. I will try it again. What would I ask for:?: |

I think they were just called microfiber towels. They came 5 in a bunch for $5.99. They were in the automotive section where the cleaning stuff for cars is. You could just ask someone in the automotive dept. where the microfiber towels are. They work pretty good, but they don't absorb all the water but I do think it makes a difference.
The cleaner I found is called "Orange Clean" and they had 2 fragrances. One was "grapefruit zest" which is what I got. The other is some citrus type fragrance and I may try that also. It says "all purpose cleaner" and "no harsh chemicals" on the front and the company it is made by is Orange Glo (it said this on the back). When I spray it, I slightly smell the grapefruit and it quickly goes away. I still don't spray it right where the birds are but if I'm 10-12 feet away and spray a little, I don't worry. It really dissipates very fast. Seems to work pretty well also. |

Thank you for the information, I will go to Target and get both of them.
I will feel much safer with the other cleaners completly gone. I think I will buy one for my daughter downstairs and one for the kitchen and both Bathrooms. Maybe everyone will get the hint
Thanks again

Hi Blossom,
Great remarks. I did not know clorox is ok. I haven't dared use it, I am a real chicken especially after loosing Kloie. I try to be extra careful. And as for insents my son-in-law burns them downstairs and Bella is upstairs. I leave a window open so that it will weaken the scent. It might not hurt to open a window. Just a crack that is by the insents. Just a suggestion. But let me know how the insents work. Sometimes I could really use a insent or two since fabreeze is not an option and neither is carpet fresheners. I once put chili powder on the carpet. I know that sounds weard but it helps keep the dog from using the area as a rest room. I dont know about using something like a spice. If anyone else has suggestions please let us know.
