Tims trying to be brave  Reply with quote

Tim has started to look like he's going to fly to me, up to now he only steps up and lets me pick him up if he gets into trouble but just lately he flys to a piece of furniture about 2 feet from his cage and he almost takes off from there towards the sofa where I sit in the evenings. I've been talking and encouraging him. He gets very excited when I'm talking to him and starts chewing and making little rrrrrrrrr noises, almost like a very soft dove kind of noise and leaning towards me when he does it. He can't quite get the courage yet although his whole body shows how excited he is and if he does land on the sofa near me I think I'll have to keep very still while talking to him so that he doesn't get alarmed, also I must make sure to have some of his favourite banana as a titbit, also I think he might be trying to talk, he has tried before from time to time. Things may get quite exciting here in the next couple of days.

Great Julie,

But where the pictures, unless you execpt us to believe you.... Very Happy

That is so good and so much fun to watch them start to fly, You know that is what they were designed to do and there is nothing as beauitful as to see your baby flying to your out streached arm.. it is truly a wonder..

Make sure you have lots of treats, real handy to give him when he does make that lap of faith to you... (and give him one for us to..)

Hi everyone, John and Carrie, I can't photograph Tim as he's frightened of the camera, there are photos of him on my homepage but he's backing away from the camera. He hasn't flown to me yet he just looks like he could anytime. Has anyone else had experience with wiuld caught Sennies like Tim? He reacts very quickly when frightened and has been known to fly into the wall in blind panic so I must keep everything calm when he's out of the cage, I haven't worked out how to get photos without worrying him, so sorry for lack of photos.

I'm desperate to see photos too... I guess what you need to do with the camera, is just leave it out all the time that he's out so he can see it... and when he's used to it being around, maybe just pick it up and put it down till he's happy with that, maybe giving him treats if he doesn't react to it, and gradually bring it nearer you're face so you can take the photos... worth a try?

Hi Allycat, I think that's the way to do it and I've been leaving the camera out, it's when I put it in front of my face that he seems to take fright. It's possible to get pictures of him like on my homepage but I can't get close and from a distance he just stands frozen to the spot, if I get closer he starts to back away and if I get too close he panics, either way he won't do what I want to show and I don't want to scare him. He's a funny mixture really, noises don't phase him and in a lot of ways he's more adaptable than a captive bred Sennie, probably because in the wild things change all the time. Shadows cause him to take fright and a lot of things that wouldn't phase captive bred birds terrify him. It would be really good to swap information with someone who has had experience of wild caught Sennies, I would like the impossible for Tim and that would be for him to be reunited with his wild family but that can't happen and whenever I talk to anyone about my fids I always mention the cruelty involved when parrots are trapped in the wild, most people just don't realise and they're horrified when they realise what happens, sorry I'm on the soapbox again.

Oh, that's great to hear Julie! How exciting for you!!
Sounds like he definitely WANTS to do it, but is still not quite sure enough. Hopefully he'll work up the courage soon & I can just imagine how proud BOTH of you will feel when that happens!

Smile Julie, do you have a telephoto lens for your camera and is it a digital one or regular slr35 camera that uses film. If the camera is digital and on the back you can see the pic before taking it, you don't have to have it in front of your face. Or if you have a telephoto lens on reg camera, you can shoot from far away.

It could be that with the camera in front of your face it changes your look to him, or that maybe he thinks the camera is attacking you and is something to be feared. hopefully in time as you leave the camera out for Tim to see and watch you handle it often, he will become used to it and accept it. keep trying and don't give up, you will get those great pics of Tim to share with us. Smile

Thanks everyone for the encouragement, the camera is a digital one and Tim gets suspicious when I pick it up and I wonder if he's waiting for me to put it in front of my face as usual, it's a good point that I don't have to put it up to my face, I'm in the age range where these things are relatively new so I forget sometimes that digital cameras are different, it does short videos but I don't think that you can get sound with it. I'll try and plan something, my mobile phone can take pictures and videos but I'm not sure also if the videos record sound also, which would be useful to record Mischief and her talking and playing peep bo (Mischief is a Hahns). If nothing else I would at least be able to add more pictures to my homepage even if Tim was just standing there doing nothing. Because he gets scared so easily I think I'll stand near the cage and play with the camera as I don't want to risk him taking fright and flying into a wall in panic. It's taken 6 years to get him this far and it's still ongoing.
