Training tips?  Reply with quote

Hi,
I've trained my Senegal Tango to shake hands, turn around and sumersault on a perch with clicker training. I saw the videos with Iago fetching things and such and I'd like to teach Tango to do similar, but I'm having a basic problem - I can get Tango to pick things up... very easy, but getting him to drop them again to get a reward after I've clicked him is the challenge, so he doesn't realise that it was a good thing.
Any ideas?
The only thing I can think of is training him to drop them by waiting till he drops it naturally and rewarding that behaviour first?

The method of training you use should fit you bird's personality. My budgie Bellamy is a copycat; I do something he trys to imitate it. He learned all of his tricks by watching me and then doing it himself. It sounds to me like you're doing something right with Tango. I'd stick to doing whatever you did to teach him his other tricks, just modify you method to fit the trick. Does that make sense?

WOW! It sounds like Tango is doing great! Good job to both of you!

I'm sure Sue can offer something in regard to getting him to pick objects up. I think I'd do just like you are, reward & praise him when he picks something up naturally, & keep encouraging him.

Just another thought (sorry about all the post but since I can't edit...). To get Bellamy to get rid of stuff I didn't want him to have I taught him "Gimme". Now he drops what he has in my hand. Maybe you could start by having Tango give you the toy back and then hold what you want tim to drop it into and just work him up to it. There! I'm sorry again.

Wow! That is great that you taught Tango to shake hands etc. How did you do the somersaults? Very Happy Please tell me!

About dropping objects: Perhaps you can hold another object in your other hand. If he drops the object to grab the other one, you'll have him where you want him to. Very Happy Also, I'm wondering.. What kind of object do you use? Don't use any chewable objects.. Very Happy

Thanks, you have all been a great help!
Last night, Tango and I worked on dropping things, and so at first whenever he dropped an object I clicked and rewarded him, and then started telling him to 'Drop' and rewarding him when he did it on cue. I think we've got a little more to go...

As far as the sumersaults, they're not in the air or anything, but I train him mostly on a stand, and he basically goes under and up the other side. He as most Senegals I'm sure are fairly acrobatic and so he's quite happy doing it!
Its not quite as easy as getting him to turn around, and I still have difficulties getting him to do the right trick for the right cue with respects to turn around and saumersault.

To train him to do saumersaults
1) Make sure that the training perch is not going to be too slippy, and that it has enough height for the bird to go down and up the other side.
2) Train the bird to reach down for the treat
3) Slowly bring your hand from below and behind the bird, so each time he's reaching further and further under him.
4) As the bird is close to coming all the way round, move the treat to encourage this behaviour.
5) Get him doing the full behaviour for the treat
6) Get him doing the full behaviour with the treat hidden in your fingers.
7) Get him to do the trick for your fingers only, without the treat (rewarding him after each successful one of course)
Cool Introduce a cue

That's great that you've achieved that! One tip: If he does something by accident, after training some time, please stop and reward him like mad. I have found that if you stop when they do something very well, they will most likely start at this level the next time. Very Happy

Thanks for posting that somersault manual here. Iago will be my victim today! Twisted Evil He mostly likes to do dignant things. He doesn't like to hang upside down for me. Rolling Eyes

Surprised Wow, that is so great that you got Tango to do those tricks. i am slowly working with my Pepper to do the bank and bow toy. You pick up pieces and drop them into the bow. She's not as excited about it but she is doing it when she is in the mood.
