| Virtually indestructable perches??? |
|
|
Tango is an amazing chewer of wood, he can get through a perch thats about 3/4" diameter in 1 day... I'm running out of stuff for him to perch on, what do you use? I don't mind giving him some wood for chewing as he obviously enjoys occupying himself that way, but he still needs to have perches that he won't or can't chew through! Any ideas? |

Hehehe almost NOTHING will hold against the chewing force of a poicephalus. They're single minded chainsaws!
I did find java branches to hold up against their beak force!
They're pretty and very durable as well! |

allycat, you could get Tango acrylic perch, rope perch or a bendable latex perch 1/2" diameter. Pepper has an assortment of perches including manzita perches. They are 1/2 " to 1 " in diameter. besides the 2 wood perches that came with her cage. She doesn't chew on her perches as I supply an endless assortment of leather toys and shreddable toys for her to chew up. The tiels are the ones who chew up their perches. I'll soon have to replace 2 perches in Maxi's cage that are badley chewed.
You can't stop a bird from doing what is natural, just supply lots of chewable toys and such. |

He's now got two manzanite perches, and I put some plastic ones in, but he's trying to gnaw at them... I will look at getting maybe some rope perches... he had a lovely chewable toy with wood and leather and shell etc. but he gnawed through the rope that hangs it up so I have to think about how I'm going to secure it in the cage!
I know it only comes naturally to him, and I don't have a problem with that, I knew it was to be expected with a Senegal, I just can't supply the number of perches that he would demand, and I worry he'd have difficulty getting to his feeding bowls without perches near them! |

allycat, you will forever be fixing Tango's toys to be played with. get some leather strings that are sold at pet stores or at a birdstore website. you can buy toy parts to replace parts of toys that your bird destroys. I am always rehanging Pepper's toys when she chews thru them. I have plenty of leather pieces around to use. I order my stuff from www.DrsFosterSmith.com. They have a lot of great stuff. you can also get a catalog from them. I also order from 8Beaks and Busy Beaks. Check them out. Its too bad we can't claim our birds as dependents, they are our children and we feed them and buy them toys. we just don't have to buy them clothes.
But they are worth spending the money on. |

I use cement perches. They are textured and hard as rock. At least, I THINK they are cement. The are his fav. perches, and help him to keep his claws and beak trim. They come in a lot of sizes and colors and I cant imagine them being easy to destroy! |

Hi sherwoods billie, wouldn't cement be kind of rough on your birds feet? Do you use other types of perches in the cage in case the birds feet get sore from the cement perches?
I read that you should have a variety of perch types and diff diameters to exercise the birds feet. |

For Poppet i use 2 wooden perches, a branch and a sandpaper perch which is all different sizes. It is really important to have different sized perches in your birds cage as they can have problems with thier feet if they have the same Good luck finding a perch (poppet demolishes his branch within the hour however he does not even try and chew his wooden perches) |
