| We finally got to bring him home! |
|
|
My wife and I brought home our bird last Saturday. I thought it would have been two weeks earlier, but he wasn't weened yet. But I guess its better to have him healthy and happy. He is still getting used to his new surroundings. I have already given him a shower, but he HATES the blowdryer! Here are some pics of him. When I figure out how to make a homepage, I will post some more pics.

Congratulations on your new little cutie! I have a Poicephalus too... Red Bellied. Just curious what are the things that made you decide on a Senegal?

cptJack, he's so cute
The good news is they stay cute, the bad news is they can be come as stubborn as a mule
Vis,
Mine certainly did want to climb higher and higher, now he just flys
And he did mouth my fingers, he'll actually still does it when he wants something
btw Vis, I see you are wearing a ring while handling him
Last time someone handled Teach with a ring, he decided the shiny thingy was his toy and some flesh was not going to stop him |

Isn't he clipped?
Mine is but since sennies are a bit stocky, he still retains his two largest flight feathers, so that he won't fall like a rock.
Now he can just make looooooong jumps using his wings (to meters at most).
I scarcely wear rings when handling the bird but even when I do, he doesn't seem to pay much notice (with a bit of discouragement too).
Contrary to what I've read about sennies, he doesn't play with his toys much yet, he prefers company.
Tell us how captain jack is ! |

I dont really believe in clipping my birds unless for their own safety.
As for the toys, wait a month or 2, mine was the same when he first came home.
A couple of months later, he'll play with anything in his cage for hours,
out of the cages he'll no wander away from us and go play on his own, but generaly he's either terrorizing us or the tiels. |

I've also read they love playing on their backs (as you can assume, I've plenty of knowledge accumulated but it's all theoretical, so they don't do much good anyway ).
Is cptJack turning on his back to play at all??
And one more thing, does he lay upside down on your hand?
I tried to turn Kouki (although I know it's too early) and although I turn him, he hangs on from my finger and tries to bite me, though not too hard. |

If he feels like it he will let me flip him and scratch his belly, or just lay in the palm of my hand playing "death". It generally doesnt last long until he decides its been enough. |

| any advice for me Captain |

Hi Captain Jack
Just wondering how you are getting along with your new birdie. I am bringing home not one but two Sennies on Monday. They are siblings. I bought one and the other was supposed to go to a new home but it fell through. When I visit my bird "Obi" they are so close ....so I got the other as well. However I am now twice as worried about the early settling in days and you have been there, done that. I am not sure yet of the sexes of the sennies but will have the DNA test results soon, hope they are reliable.I have all the supplies I need, but I wondered if there is anything you came across or that surprised you. I have pictured terrible mess, noise, attitude PLUS PLUS so hopefully reality will be a little less.Look forward to hearing from All the Sennie owners. I have looked at all the home pages and read so many past comments from all of you and I have learned so much.Thankyou Fluffy Sue for a wonderful, informative web site.Bye for now. |

What worried me most when Kouki came home was the fact that he refused to eat (there's the relevant topic here I believe )
He was so depressed he lost his old home and siblings he wouldn't do anything by himself.
I tried to feed him and he would eat but I was told I shouldn't because he'd start wanting everything hand fed.
So I removed the upper perches and left only two, one in front of his food and one in front of the water (both low in the cage).
Foodsticks also helped.
Now he eats absolutely anything, begs for a taste from my plate when I have lunch and if I don't give him, he comes to get it.
(Once, he came and left dragging a whole slice of bread away from the table....)
The other issue with my sennie is that he doesn't like anyone. Yes okay he loves me, I can scratch and pet and kiss and squeeze him but everyone else in the house will most likely be bitten if they dare touch. The only thing he may accept is a scratch at the back of his head. |

I will definitely watch out for the eating problem, hopefully being together will not be as traumatic for them. Thanks for the perch ideas incase I need it. |

Senegals can make such a mess, hahaha! Be prepared! However, you can arrange the cage a little to minimize the mess. (By adding acrylic plates next near the food bowl etc) |
