Hi all,
I am trying to read up more abt Senegals when I chanced upon this site.
As it is quite rare to find senegal babies in where I am, I would like to know if it is advisable to get a wild senegal. I heard that they are extremely difficult to tame as wild adults and like your thoughts on that. Saw a few at a local pet shop and they are extremely nervous, as mentioned in most websites and lit.
Thanks......... |

Hi Melvin!
Welcome to this forum..
I just looked into your profile and saw that you were from the Sunny Island?
What do you mean?
Wild Senegals would be ok, BUT you would have to know about parrot behavior..
Do you intend to clip your Sennie's wings?
I am not a supporter of imported birds.. But that's just my opinion! |

Sunny island = Singapore!!!
I will want my Senegal parrot to be a companion parrot so clipping the wings is defintiely a must. It will be easier to tame if it is flightless.
I am not really a supporter of imported birds too, esp if they are threatened species....A bit of dilemma there. Seems like Senegals not really threatened yet. (Correct me on this if I am wrong).
Reason I am so concern is that wild senegals seems to hard to tame as compared to other species of wild parrots.
I am only experienced with lovebirds so far..... |

Hey Melvin.
Is Sunny island an actual island in Singapore? Just curious.
Oh and before I forget, welcome to the forum!
Sorry I'm not much help when it comes to senegals. I haven't even seen one real life!! LOL.
I just thought that I'd mention that all wild parrots/cockatoos would be fairly hard to tame no matter the species. Especially the adult ones. However if you're talking about bird that has been raised in an aviary by it's parents then sold to people, there's a better chance it'll tame down a lot easier as it has already had human contact in a way that they have seen the breeder around them and stuff.
Good luck with your bird if you end up getting one.
Cheers

Hahahaha there is no such Island in Singapore. Singapore itself is a tiny island with area of 647.5 sq km.
I agree that all wild parrots are difficult to train but with patience and right approach, it is still possible. While I have heard of people taming other species of wild parrots successfully, I rarely come across cases of wild senegals successfully tamed. (Sennies are not popular here)
I think that imported wild specimens are not readily available in many countries so most people I come across on the web got senegals as babies/young birdies.
I guess I shall wait patiently for a young one/captive bred one. |

Hey Melvin,
Don't get me wrong. I realised that Singapore is a small island itself. Afterall I lived in Malaysia for 13years!! It might just be an little island that is just off the shore of the main island. That is possible isn't it? Isn't Sentosa an island? Just wondering.
From the sound of things, you're probably better off waiting for a baby senegal. Can I ask you why you've chosen senegal to be your companion bird? Just wondering how you came to the decision.
Cheers

I see Melvin! I really didn't know that..
I am glad to hear that you want to clip your Senegal's wings as my Senegal (and more!) are more bossy when their wings are grown. And I mean really bossy!
I think that if you handle your Senegal in a neutral room, train him there (to step up) that it won't be a problem but I'd suggest that you consult an avian behaviorist as he or she might be able to help you.
Don't get me wrong, it's not that I don't want to help, but I just want to make sure that it won't be a disappointment for you! |
